Hi All - just wanted to share my experience quitting smokeless tobacco. Didn't see any other thread about it when I searched.

I started dipping casually with groups of friends when I was probably 15 years old. By the time I was 17 I was having multiple a day. Throughout college I almost always had a chew in. On the way to class, in the dorms, studying, drinking, etc. I was going through a tin a day. After college I slowed down a bit (2 tins/week). When I was 24 I started having some tooth pains and immediately thought the worst. So I went to the dentist and got a root canal (had nothing to do with dipping). So, I continued to dip since it didn't have anything to do with the dip.

A month or so after, I started thinking about the what if's. I decided I was going to quit. After doing some research online on different ways people quit, I came across Jake's Mint Chew. It is a tobacco free, nicotine free, organic Chew Alternative made completely from Mint leaves. I used Jake's for about a year and then I just seemed to stop using it. Not by choice, or anything. Completely subconscious. And fast forward to now, I haven't used Dip in 1 1/2 years and haven't used Jake's Mint Chew in 6 months.

Just wanted to share my experience in quitting and to plug Jake's Mint Chew for anyone who is thinking of quitting.

Yes I did after 32yrs. It's been almos 2 months and the longest I've ever gone. It's been hell but I think I might just be able to do this. If I end up falling off the wagon I'll have to give this a try.

Your story is a lot like mine except I still dip a can a day since I was around 16. Started when I was 15 and I'm 24 now. I really need to get around to order some of those natural chews. I know there's a few brands but I just haven't done it yet. Good job man. Keep it up.

    FWIW, I am 26.

I was surprised at how well Jake's Mint worked for me. Took a little bit to get used to the texture of it and the whole being able to swallow the juice without any stomach issues. A plus to Jake's also is that its cheaper and you don't have to pay any tobacco tax.

A co-worker of mine started using Jake's right after I did. He had been dipping for 20 years and hasn't had a dip since. He couldn't believe he didn't have any withdrawals or anything to that affect.

Good job. I dipped throughout HS because it was the cool thing to do in the football locker room and most of my college years. I used sunflower seeds to wing myself off of it. Glad I no longer have to buy those expensive cans anymore.

Now I just need to smoke smoking when I go out to a bar or something.

13 years of good ol' Cope Wintergreen and I quit cold turkey last January. Few times had massive cravings and opted for some of the natural chews that satisfied enough to get through it.

Now well over a year and for the most parts it's smooth sailing.

Things I've noticed personally - Food tastes better. Less irritable. Better peace of mind.

1 to 1 1/2 cans a day here for about 12 years now. Tried quitting before. Seriously think about it often.

Wonder if this would help a smoker quit? Something tells me that *maybe* the subconscious thing about it being a substitute for a bad thing / habit would placate a smokers cravings somewhat, because they say you gotta do SOMETHING when you feel the urge to light up. Maybe this non-chew would be that something.

    Yes, I smoke :anonymous:

I dipped for 23 yrs- 1.5 can a day habit. Quit back in Jan.

As of this day I've been Tobacco free.

Was not an easy road. Cravings/addiction are behind me, but mental side of it still gets me on some days.

As I did damn near everything with a chew in my mouth. (yard work, driving etc etc)

Good luck OP and all others. It is a tough one. Well worth it though.

Just have to separate the habits from the dip. Don't associate driving/grass cutting/ camping etc with it.

    not worth it.

Good for you guys who managed to quit the addiction.
An investigator with the local PD just had surgery last month because he had cancer in his jaw from dipping, very difficult to get it removed and have Chemo, deal with the bone grafts from the legs, and learn to talk again vs quitting.

Family was absolutely part of my motivation to quit. My GF and I have been dating for about 10 years (started dating sophomore year of high school). Knowing someday I will marry her and have kids was a huge motivator for me to quit.

    Same here.

I was using Rocky Mountain herbal chew. Was not really a fan of the taste, but it did help.
Gum was a big player for me. Never in my life have I chewed so much gum.
