I will do my best to update with an after picture but this Tacoma earned its keep saving a close friend of mines life tonight. She drove it off the side of a cliff, rolled it twice, blew out all the windows , deployed the side airbags and walked away without a mark!

I'm sure she'll be sore as hell in the morning and without transportation so is there anybody in CO that has a reliable vehicle they can part with for around $1,000? This poor girl has some crap luck (usually) and this was her baby so I just want her in something that I know won't cost her a ton of money in repairs. I'm in AZ so it's hard for me to help from here but if you know of anything or have anything that may work I'd be super thankful!

Oh and if you have any tips or advice on dealing with the insurance company and so on that would be awesome as I know some of you have gone through this before.

First off glad she's ok man that is scary. Best bet is to go ahead and talk with a few lawyers they usually will do a free consultation. Then if needed you know which one you'll use. Also tell her not to say too much the addage less is more is key in talking with ins. companies. Don't know the circumstance and if it was offroad or not but that may make the ins company not want to pay. I'd read through her all her ins. paperwork and all the fine print.

I'll get some photos up for frame of reference as soon as I get them. I don't want her dealing with some random Craigstlister so I will look around and see what I can hunt down.

Also, she was issued a careless driving ticket, she admitted to the cop she was doing about 15 over (I would have said an animal ran out in the road) and was on a typical Colorado mountain road at the time. I told her she needs to fight that charge and get it reduced and she refuses to do so in which case I'm not sure how that will impact her insurance but I'm guessing unless she gets that charged reduced it isn't going to end well for her.

It sucks for her for sure but at least she didn’t compromise her integrity and lie about it like you want her to do.

Have her try and plea guilty but ask judge to withhold adjudication. It will go on her license with no points. Insurance can't hold it against her.

Integrity is telling oneself the truth. Honesty is telling the truth to other people. I don't think in order to maintain her integrity she is obligated to incriminate herself, do an officers job for them, pay higher insurance rates, volunteer to have a criminal record, or subscribe to some arbitrary rules created by some governing body. We're all allowed to make mistakes and learn from them, she's going to punish herself more than enough and I see no "integrity" to be found in an additional monetary punishment to the State and insurance companies when in reality she's so sweet she would likely use said money to help a homeless person or care for a stray animal.

Sounds like you've never driven in rural Colorado. Somebody drives off that road at least 4-5 times a week.

It takes integrity to do what’s right and own up to the consequences of your actions.

Ya... and the consequences are she got banged up and she totaled her truck.

But you're suggesting to keep her integrity she should pay a fine to the State? For what? She should let the insurance company off of paying for her truck?

You want to talk about lack of integrity? Ya... the first examples of lack of integrity would be the insurance companies... second example would be the Government.

If she has insurance it will cover her medical and the truck repair or they will total it and pay the value of the truck. A lot will depend on exactly what coverage she has. It doesn’t matter if she was speeding, drunk, driving recklessly or what ever her insurance still covers her. If she doesn’t think she should have got a ticket then she should fight it as it may affect her future insurance premiums.
It’s almost impossible to beat a careless driving violation. Almost anything can be considered careless driving. The fact that she drove off a cliff is in it self considered careless driving.
Just tell her to be honest with the insurance company. They will get a copy of the police accident report so they will know what happened.

Just be honest with the Insurance Co so they can pay out as little as possible and jack her rates. They will have a copy of the accident report so they will know WHAT THE OFFICER AT THE SCENE (and didn't witness anything) SAYS HAPPENED.

Colorado is big on plea bargaining. Literally your ticket will come in the mail with the fine/points already reduced. Of course they take into considerations (person/age/record/blah blah blah) and at that time you can either pay the fine or go the court route. My recent speeding ticket, was reduced from 2 points to 1 point. Got it in the mail, then mailed the check and called it good.

In Colorado, careless driving is a misdemeaner traffic offense and will get you 4 pts on your driving record. The misdemeaner means possible jail time or at least community service. My daughter rear ended someone on I-25 last year and was issued a careless driving citation. I told her to get a lawyer. She did and was able to get it reduced to defective vehicle and 2 pts. A Careless Driving charge is pretty serious around here, your friend needs to lawyer up.

Sorry about your friends accident. Glad she was ok. The roads were nasty today the two times I went out.

I’m sure she has full coverage with that new of a truck. Depending on insurance company, this will be handled very quickly.

My lady had an accident that totaled our 14 Tacoma. We purchased a new vehicle the next day, money was back in the account in two weeks.

Have her go to court. Most times the ticket is reduced to a stupid non-moving violation fine. Colorado is in the top three states for the most expensive auto insurance. Hell, my insurance with a sports car, in California, in my early 20’s was cheaper than this flippen state. Your friend will find this out real soon.

If she needs some help with an auto purchase, I have some good friends that will treat her right.

I she needs a car short term, rent one on weekly rates can be pretty good. No reason to toss 1000.00 away on a POS.

Agreed. Unless you know a family member or good friend with a reliable, high mileage car that they'd be willing to let go of for a grand...I wouldn't trust most anything that $1k would buy you in the 'reliable commuter' vehicle department. Better to use that thousand bucks as a down payment on a used Corolla or Civic from a dealership with cheap monthly payments and a certified warranty. Small cars like that can be had for pretty cheap monthly payments.
