Personally, a good med kit is probably one of the best things you could do. Seat belt cutter, small extinguisher(probably wont do a lot but could make a difference), flairs.

A fire extinguisher in the house would not be used to kill the fire ... it would be used to "cover my fast exit". Same with a car fire ... cover the escape.

Yes exactly. Theres a potential situation where it could be used beneficially. Most likely when trying to help/access some one elses vehicle. Could obviously be useful for onboard as well. Just dont want to put the idea in some ones head that they can quench and stop a fire just by using one. It can make the difference thats needed. Thats why I have one.

Every Christmas they try to remind people that tree fires spread to drapes and couches quickly, and the living room is a furnace within 1-2 minutes. Get the HELL out and call the fire department from a neighbor house.

    Gotta evaluate the situation!
Do you use to escape or to put the fire out!
I’ve successfully put out fires at work stupid shit garbage cans.
I’ve always said no I’m just gonna get out but In the moment I grabbed the extinguisher and put it out.
Haha then they complain I used a brand new extinguisher.

Certainly evaluate. A grease fire in a small pan is one thing. A fire that has invaded the passenger compartment from the engine bay is another.

We used to carry those machinist center punches for that purpose in EMS. Inever used one for that, but they are great for punching sheet metal for drilling. I wouldn't count on one for self rescue though.

Thanks for that input. I have never needed to escape myself or wanted to destroy a perfectly usable window. But for $4 the purchase was not crippling and can be used for other tasks. The less-expensive knife has the carbide tip on it so most likely I would first cut myself free from the seatbelt and immediately use that tip on the window, resorting to other tools only as needed.

    Just a follow up:

First, huge thanks to everyone in this community. This has been tough. Good news is that we were not to seriously hurt. Wife got the worst of it and is getting additional medical attention and PT. She will be 100% soon, I am sure. I should not be so easily knocked off balance, but when the truck did a flip, I kinda did too. Your support is hugely appreciated.

Second, here is a link to the seatbelt cutters/window glass breaker I had in the vehicle. Not making money here. Just info:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B444Z9V?smid=A3O83O0HAKPUJ8

Third, something I learned that I did not mention before: Just about everything was bolted or velcroed down in the vehicle or bed. Stuff detached itself in the crash. I think the main fail were the rails around the lip of the truck bed. I had a fire extinguisher held in with QuickFists. The QuickFists were attached to a THICK aluminum sheet and then to the rails with two t-nuts. You can see all of this in the photos. The QuickFists held, but the rail failed and everything attached went flying. My recovery gear was in bags that were bolted to the rails with carabiners. This went flying too. Everything becomes a bullet.

Fourth, BIG shout out to Ryan at Shmellmopwho. Rock rails saved us. They took the brunt of the impact. There is no way to indemnify yourself against other people's lack of attention/effort/whatever. But you can walk away from it. Get yourself some protection.

Fifth, if you are a diver, consider the Alpha Scuba racks. I was a beta tester. They held (from photo: they got twisted around but are still attached).

    Best,

    LJTacoma

My neighbor did this with a plastic coffee can he used for butts by the back door, burned 2/3 of the house down. I was home when I heard another neighbor screaming and banging to alert them, the fire went up the outside corner of the house, up the eve, and in to the attic. They had seconds to get out.

Thanks for the update. Hope you and yours are back in the open water soon!

That is interesting about the inside bed rails. On most trucks, the cap or topper would be bolted or clamped directly to the top lip of the bed itself. But with the composite bed, you’re bolting to a secondary attachment. Just guessing, but the Smartcap probably ripped the rails out, and then everything went it’s own way.

Also, good info on the rock sliders. That’s on the list now, along with better bumpers.

You are either an extremely strong individual, or you have never tried to bust out a car window before. The fire extinguisher people were talking about earlier would probably be a better dual use option. Put out a fire/ bust out a window.

Glad to hear you and your wife are doing okay. That impact involved some SERIOUS forces. I was just about to ask who made those rock sliders. Rock sliders were not at the top of my to-do list, but that changed after seeing your photos

100% agree, especially if the seatbelt is around ones neck, this seem to be a total nightmare to me

There are a bunch of sensors to determine what bags go off. If there wasn't enough force in the proper direction to require them, then they don't deploy because doing so unnecessarily could actually cause additional injuries.
