Anybody use R134a refrigerant in their 3rd Gen? It's about 1/5 the price... Mine's currently bone dry and I'm thinking about getting the adapter.

And please spare me the environmental concerns...

Curious why a truck so new needs refrigerant? Damage to the condenser?

    I wouldn't use it.

    Isn't your Tacoma a '17? R134A was used in the '16 and '17s and R1234 is now in the '18 and '19s.

My Tacoma is a 17. The dealer quoted me for the 1234. I'll have to check my fittings after work.

you can try it, the pressures are going to be similar. they should both use PAG oil. Just understand this is technically illegal and you could possibly blow your compressor.

There is no 'lifespan' on refrigerant. As long as the system is sealed it works just fine.

16 is also 1234yf. Atleast my US production truck is. Maybe they were using 134a in the mexico plant.

I just checked TIS and R134A was used on the 2016 and 17 and the R1134 was use on 2018 and up. It's that way in Canada on a US built Tacoma but not sure if that changes for American market trucks.

AC systems don’t use much these days without gauges and a scale you will fuck it up... I think the Tacoma holds around 440 grams.

Find the leak before you add it, you shouldn’t screw up the environment because you won’t take care of that first.

Actually, R134A does not deplete the ozone layer, they banned chlorine containing refrigerant for home consumers a long time ago. But that still doesn’t mean you shouldn’t fix that hole in your pocket

Bought my 1993 Toyota new, AC worked flawlessly from day one until I sold it last year.
    25 years!

Last year, maybe last model to use the good old R12 refrigerant.

Looks to me like it will work. Did you vacuum test the system yet?

I've always been told to keep the same refrigerant unless you've cleaned out your system/ replaced all the fittings. Basically made it a brand new system. From what I understand you dont want to mix the oils or the residue of the old refrigerant otherwise you might end up blowing your compressor due to the pressure differentials.

Yes, definitely want to find the leak first.
Don't be one of those auto parts store junkies, stopping by every few weeks go buy another can of refrigerant with a sweaty $20 , and pump it right there in the parking lot.

Interesting. I could swear I saw a sticker for R1234YF under the hood of my '17. Mine is a Texas build, FWIW.

I believe you may be right about the new refrigerant in the '17 for the US market. I only have access to Inforstream for Canada.

You did, because that's what the sticker in my '16 says. Guess those Canuks aren't as environmentally friendly as us Yanks.
