I thought all are 1234yf, but apparently this thread has clarified that at least in Canada it isn’t that way, according to techstream. Probably all 1234yf in the US though.

This post by Jeff is interesting though for US-residents:

    I've never seen a 134a 3rd gen in Canada. I had a very early 16 and it was 1234yf

The problem I'd wager is the capacity, you'd have to know how to read the gauges and how much to add.

1234yf is crazy expensive but I wouldnt waste time with 134a and adapters.

I wish it were clearer than that for 2016 and 2017 Tacoma's. Mine was manufactured at the tail end of 2016 and sold as a 2017. I suppose the correct way involves fully evacuating the system and then recharging with 1234yf.

Looking at the ports would tell you what you have…they’re different between the rerefrigerants to keep from mixing.

I wish we could have just stuck with 134a. Refrigerant was one thing that really didn’t need to change.

There's a sticker under the hood listing refrigerant type, oil type and charge amounts

I don’t know what comes with what, but I do believe Mexico gets 134a and there are numerous mentions of 134a in the FSM. I never did find anything in there that says what gets what though. Every truck I’ve seen in the US had 1234yf, which isn’t surprising.

Well, I don't know what happened to the sticker under the hood. This is the low pressure fitting on the passenger side,

    Somewhere in the Mojave Desert...
    Vehicle:
    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
It has zero “ODP” (Ozone Depleting Potential) because it does not contain chlorine which is what reacts with ozone with older refrigerants, that’s why they banned the older stuff. But it does contribute to global warming as it holds in IR energy though and may also be replaced in the future because of this. Use Google Scholar- lots of research about it there.

Truck was built in Mexico December 2016 and sold as a 2017 model. I guess that sums it up.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
High side fitting is in the radiator support behind the grille...right side.

edit: It was my understanding the change happened with the change to 3rd gen.
