Just had the stealer install a new Rack and Pinion in May (extended warranty) on my 03 taco, but after picking it up the steering was very loose feeling and now I have a banging when you turn the wheel about 1/4 turn.
I gave them new outer tie rods to install too.

Just took it back and bitched, and they tell me the new rack is shot and I need the yoke in the steering column…WTF?

What's going on with Toyota?? never had these kind of problem before.::(

did they put new bushings in? i friend of mine just did new mount bushings in his first gen steering rack they were making all sorts of problems. try running the truck and have someone turn the wheel back and forth and you crawl underneath and see if you can see the steering rack assembly shifting. if so the bushings are shot. energy suspension makes an awesome bushing replacement kit.

Did you complain to them that you had loose steering?Cause usually they just dont go and replace a Rack without some justification for doing so? Usually they'll replace it if the owner complains of loose steering(worn out bushings) or has leaking PS fluid ,they replace with a Remanufactored unit.

ttylerr that’s the problem the original rack had. The bushing on the driver’s side blew out and the rack was jumping off the frame. But Toyota didn’t sell the bushing by itself and the extended warranty was still good, so they replace the entire rack and pinion.

If they replace the rack again, buy yourself some Energy Suspension bushings online about $30 or less and tell Yota to use them instead of the factory rubber ones:wink: and also get the sway bar ones and replace them yourself real easy to do 10mm socket, and some Penetrating oil big difference

Now the steering feels loose and I have a banging in the steering column, if you hit even a small pot hole the steering wants to go all over the place.

They are replacing the rack and pinion and the yoke now. hope this solves the problem.
