I'm new to the forum. My radio quit in my 2002 Tacoma. I checked all fuses under the hood and the drivers side panel. Everything appears to be working except the 2 lighter plugs below the radio next to the center console. The one just below the radio is still working. Any ideas, on what to check next. Is their a fusible link behind the radio or the inop lighter plugs?

This could be many things. Is it aftermarket? Does it power on? Youre going to eventually have to take the console off and remove it.

It is the original radio and I have never had a problem with it. It does not power on and I have no problem removing it. Thanks

The internal fuse panel has a fuse for the radio, check that.

Otherwise simplest thing to do would be to remove the center panel, remove radio, check connections, check voltage from B+ pin on harness.

Look at the little fuse box near the battery. If your two aux plugs aren't working then that fuse may be blown, but I don't know if the radio ties into the same power source.

Yep. I actually was passing by the auto section at ol' WallyWorld and saw they had radio (53x4w, too) with a pair of 6.5s and 6x9s for a $100. I grabbed one for something one day.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have checked all the fuses on both the external and interior fuse boxes. All are good. I will check the pin connection that you suggested.

So I also have a 2002 Taco. When I bought it, the radio (factory) didn’t work or power on. I went through the fuses without luck then just bought a new one. (Blaupunkt NJ220 BT). It worked great for almost a year. One day I turned it off to get out and it stayed on. I should have pulled the post, but I instead restarted. The radio hasn’t powered on still. I don’t want to repeat buying until it randomly dies. Thoughts?

Hello: i had a similar problem with my factory 2000 Tacoma radio CD, TAPE, AM/FM, all working fine when turned the key off. Turned key on a few hours later and no radio, WHAT! how can that be. Checked the fuses just because it was easy. Everything else works except the radio, I mean it is dead as a door nail, no lights even at night, acts like someone unplugged it. Ripped it out, threw it on the bench, got schematic off the web WHEW! found open resistor R753. This lets the computer know that the Ign switch has been turned on, and makes it all happy. Replaced the bugger and now back in business. You see the radio is always on, just like a TV that has a remote, always on. It just looks to see if you turned on the Ign switch, it could not see that action, so it did nothing at all. Hope that helps someone..

Oddly enough, after disconnecting the battery to work on something else, the radio started working again. I am sure you diagnosed the issue. Thanks!

So, I'm a proud new owner of an '02 Tacoma. Bought it from the original owner who gave me a great deal on it about a month ago. Since then I have been working on deferred maintenance items, to get it through inspection this week. Now it's time to attack the annoying items..... The radio doesn't work!. So far, I checked the outlets below the radio, they both work. I've disconnected the battery for well over an hour (It DID get rid of the service alert indication.....but no radio reset. ) Curious about R753 in the radio. Will be pulling out the radio tomorrow night.

Hi everyone.. I'm having similar issues with my radia. Anyone have any information regarding the open resistor R753.
Just trying to figure out where it is located and how to test if it is good or bad.

Can you post the links for the schematic and where you purchased the R753 open resistor??

They quit over the years if you can get the schematics you might be able to find the problem and repair it

    Just replace the radio

As stated above, just replace the radio.

If you're buying a used vehicle from someone, you should have every right to ask "why doesn't xxxxx work?"

You're the one forking over cash for a vehicle.

But to answer your question about "figuring it out" there could be tons of reasons why the OP's didn't work as well as the one you're about to buy.

    Bad radio.
Bad radio wiring, or done incorrectly.
    Chewed up radio wiring.
Old radio, gave up the ghost.
Dead fuse, aftermarket stereos have a fuse as well.

Here's mine when I was diagnosing why I only got sound from my driver rear and passenger front, remaining speakers didn't work -

    20220127_085105.jpg

Disgusting hack job. They didn't even care to buy an adapter to connect to the factory wire harness and instead spliced into it

These things aren't hard to fix.

I really hate to see that and make things worse by using butt connectors

When getting the correct adapter is really easy.

I do too, especially for something that is so easy to do correctly such as wiring a radio, amp, and speakers.

On the plus side, my interior speakers are amplified by an external amp. Downside is I'll need to run all new wiring to do it nice and clean.

    Eww. That’s in the 80?

I’d be tempted to cut back the factory wires, slap a new connector on, and then build out a harness to adapt it to the radio.
