The signal bars in the top right corner of the screen relate to your phone's signal strength, not the satellite radio.

New head unit installed today. Worked fine until I connected my iPhone. Tried several things and it looks like the issue is directly related to the contacts, maybe the number of contacts, not sure. Regardless, I unpaired the phone and then reconnected, but this time did not allow contacts to be uploaded to the head unit. Everything works fine now.

    Greetings all,

I've got a 2017 Tacoma with a stock touch screen radio stereo CD player and this happened to me on the way home from work. I soon realized that this only happens only when I have bluetooth enabled. So naturally I turn off my bluetooth and the reboot behavior stopped. Talked to a service guy at Toyota and its a known software bug with iPhones when you say yes to syncing your contacts on your phone to the radio. If you delete your bluetooth profile on your phone and don't enable syncing of your contact this should stop the issue.

They also suggested that my radio get a software update after I re-synced the the bluetooth profile.

The option for the software upgrade was that I could have them do it for $85.00 or I could do it myself by downloading the update from the internet to a usb stick then plugging it into my car and upgrading the radio that way through the settings menu.

I hope this helps anyone with a similar issue.

Follow these steps that have worked for me.

    1) Forget device from iPhone
    2) Remove iPhone from head unit.
    3) Delete all personal data from head unit.
    4) Ensure phone is up to date.
    5) Re-pair phone but do not transfer contacts.
    6) Make phone calls and if the results are good then we have to take a few more steps on your phone.

If functioning normally without contacts on head unit, continue as below.

    1) Forget device from iPhone
    2) Remove iPhone from head unit.
    3) Delete all personal data from head unit.
    4) Go to iPhone and delete all contact photos.
    5) On iPhone delete a Memoji that you have set to appear on others phones when you call.
    6) Ensure phone is up to date.
    7) Re-pair phone and transfer contact to head unit this time.
    8) Make phone calls and if the results are good, issue resolved until Apple and Toyota get their heads together and figure this bug out.

I've had great results with no reboots for a week now.

Please let me know if this works for you guys!

Great... Here's my go. Resetting started a couple of weeks ago, once every few times I drove. Became more frequent, today reset constantly. Maybe stayed on for 30 seconds at a time. I have video of it.
Taking it in to the dealer tomorrow.
Software v. 10189. iphone X, newest update. No rain, at all. 2017 OR, JBL.

Not a voltage loss problem to the Radio ??? or a bad ground ?? Lost of power will cause the unit to reboot.

Great question. I didn't see any CELs or other electrical issues. Didn't check battery connection yet.

Just got it back from the dealer, they "updated the software." They told me that the "fix" is unpairing everything and pairing it back. The radio rebooted twice before I left the parking lot.
I was curious to see if there was even a new software version, and sure as shit, same audio software 10189. Checked updated history, nothing....
Turned around and went back in. They said they'll try and order me a new headunit. After talking to a decent guy in there about it, I got some more information. Turns out this is effecting a lot of newer Tacomas and 4Runners (including brand new, with Carplay). And the new Siennas are coming back within 1000 miles with the same issues. This seems to be isolated to iPhones currently, as most new updates cause this to happen. But for some reason, not all have this problem.

Toyota's being really shitty about this IMO. They are aware this is a problem, yet they are dealing with it by throwing in shitty updates that rarely work, and if they do, it's only temporary as each new update will likely cause it to happen again. Instead of at least offering this update to their customers, it'll cost you to fix it if you're out of warranty.
I confirmed it's a phone connectivity issue, as the radio, CD player, and headphone jack all work fine, no reboots.

As the headunits in these models are critical to the vehicle's proper function, and are not able to be swapped for something else, this is a serious problem.

Further testing has the audio connecting fine with the USB though the iPhone input in audio source.
Tested bluetooth today, but turned off the "phone" connection off in the bluetooth settings. Worked fine.

This leads me to believe that the issue is when the headunit tries to connect the phone features via BT. Likely a memory or communication issue when syncing contacts.

    Thanks, I’ll check that out!
As for now; I’ve traced the reboot to syncing contacts via BT. I’ve “solved” the issue by forgetting the devices, repairing, and selecting “off” for sync contacts in the BT setting on the phone.
The radio worked for a 6 hour trip, streamed music, made calls, everything worked fine except I didn’t have contacts synced.

I just update mine from 010189 to 010192. No issue with the update - took about 10 minutes to do. Not sure what the "improvements" are but everything works. 010189 was update preformed by the dealer in March of 2017. 010192 was released in September 2019.
