I have a 2005 tacoma and this AM after starting the truck my radio would not turn on. Worked fine yesterday and today after pushing the power button numerous times with no luck. Checked the two fuses under the hood and they were both good, so I am not sure what else to check. Any help would be appreciated. Stock system. Thanks

2nd gen radios are notorious for becoming problematic after 8 or so years. What you describe is common when they start to crap out. It’s 17 years old. Just have it replaced.

Yup, the 2nd gen radios are really worth replacing. $150 or less at Crutchfield.com is the way to go to get a sound system that is 10x better. Very easy to do an install yourself.

Can someone explain what the steps are to replace it? What trim has to get removed and how do I get the plastic trim removed? Thanks

Sorry I can’t answer your question but I can say it’s not that expensive to buy and have it professionally installed. Just contact a couple places that specializes in car stereos. You’ll find that they offer lots of choices.

    Removal is pretty simple.

1 - Remove A/C controls by using panel removal tool. Slide under one corner and pop out. There’s 4 slide clips, nothing to break, but can be scratched.
2 - You will see 4 10mm bolts where the A/C controls were. Remove them.

3 - Pull radio out. Same clips hold it in as are on the A/C control panel.

If you buy from Crutchfield, they will show you what shroud goes with your new radio, and a wiring diagram on how to get the new radio in without cutting anything.

Based on the quality of my Toyota radio if it would not turn on I would consider that an upgrade.

As mentioned, the Crutchfield purchase will also have install instructions and an installation kit. Some people like to use plastic automotive trim removal kits. Its not hard to do yourself if you're half handy. WAY easier than back in the 80s trying to figure out which wire is which
