I have a 2012 trd 4 door. The radio didn't come on about a month ago when I got in after work. I figured fuse. So came home to change it and the fuse was fine later in the evening it came on. I thought there has to be a short somewhere but not really sure... It seems to work mornings and when i go to lunch but after I get off around 5 and patterned only when it's hot out ( over 95 f ) it's happening only in the afternoon and only when it's hot. That has been the pattern anyway. Has anyone else experienced this? I do not have anything aftermarket on the truck at this point so I am stumped as to what it could be. Nothing else goes out either just the radio.

Happened again today. Worked fine this morning then again at lunch worked fine. Get in to leave and radio will not come one at all. I have an hour plus drive home and never came on. Been siting for several hours tried it and it works! I am at a complete loss on this one. Should I take it to the dealer or just replace the whole radio?

Sounds like the heat is affecting the eclectronic connections. May need to replace the head unit?

That was my thinking. However I have never heard of anything like this before with a stock system. I guess I may just be lucky like that then? Should I get an OEM or just go all new head unit?

It sounds like a connection somewhere. Since you say it only happens when it's hot I'm thinking something is expanding just enough to lose contact? I would check alk connections, fuses, etc including in back of the unit. I would pull each connection and reattach one at a time just to get a new connection. Other than that you will need a meter to start checking power n ground when it's not working. Always possible it's it the head unit but hope not. Hope it helps some?

Since moving to the Houston area.....its warmer and more humid than the SF Bay Area.....and on 4 occasions now, my stock head unit has "frozen" and restarted itself, or I have to hold the power button to kick start her up. :notsure: 2015 TRD Sport....never any issues with the damn radio before this.

That makes since. I am trying to figure out the exact times or there about. As it was 95 today at lunch when the radio came on no issue shut off got back in after a few more hours sitting and nothing. same temp just a longer time being out... I can only assume there is something possibly disconnecting somehow.

You know it has been really humid and rainy here in Florida the past several days so I wonder if this is a factor as well? I mean my truck is not open however I know it still could get in there.

Yeah, I don't leave the windows down at all...even though I'd like to, as to relieve some of the heat....but, around here you never know when torrential rain will come.

But yeah, new issue to me.

I have a pool heater with a lcd screen and when the heater is on, the display will go blank. The heat that is produced by the heateris causing issue. At one point it cause the wires to heat up and lose connection on one prong. I would wiggle it and heater wuld fire up and then heat up lose contact again. Only way to fix it was to replace the wire harness

for sure an aggravating issue for sure. I don't listen to the radio in the evenings often but when I want to or even to take a call I am unable to. I guess I will be pulling the head unit out this weekend to see what I see.

You should be able to recreate it bypulling the head unit and wiggling the wires around. First start with the whole harness and then move to individual wires.

Oh man. I guess its possible the radio is getting too hot, not sure the inside temp but the outside temp reads 90-95 at least. I am not sure I am competent enough to do a wiring harness change out.... there goes my lift money now. LOL always something

Calm down. Its not that hard. If the head unit is off, then wiggle till u get power, if its working wiggle until it shuts off. Thats all you are doing until u can locate issue.

I really don't think it's going to be a wiring harness other than maybe a connection point. If it's not coming on at all it should be a power or ground wire connection or bad fuse connection if it's not in the H/U itself? If you have a meter, I would start at the radio fuse to make sure it's getting power when the truck is on. Then go from there. Of course this would have to be done when the radio won't come on..

I will start here and see. I assume it will not come on tomorrow afternoon although I am now wanting it to not work so my guess is it will. lol Anyway I will play around with it to see. If I am able to find anything I will post pics of it. Thanks for all the input. Gives me some starting points for sure.

It's not the harness. Its internal radio issue.
    Very common.
You need a new head unit

Shortly after buying my Taco new in 2011, the head went kaput. Replaced under warranty. Now occasionally when it is hot, the LCd display will be blank, add pressing the Preset buttons will not change the station. A minute or two on the road, with the windows rolled down, and it resumes normal operation. I may be looking into a new sound system........

Is that second unit from Toyota?

I am thinking of going with a different radio manufacturer when I do the second replacement.
