I've had a rain leak on my passenger side for awhile. It was somewhat intermittent but annoying. Lately, it has seemed to worsen so I decided it was time to track it down. It was due to deteriorated tape inside the door in an area Toyota calls the drain-back. The tape works in conjunction with the interior vapor barrier to direct water to the door bottom drains. Water was splashing against the backside of the door trim and dripping into the cab.

I've attached a pdf write up showing removal of the door trim and vapor barrier, replacement of the butyl tape, clean up, reattaching the vapor barrier, and drain-back hole tape. Hopefully, this will be helpful to anyone else with the same or similar problem.

Sorry, I failed to get a picture of the Gorilla Tape. It basically went back in the same place as the original yellow factory tape. I cut 2 strips 2" x 5" and centered them on the drain back hole areas - the same place as the original tape.

I edited the write up to include some dashed lines showing the Gorilla Tape locations. Version 2...

Ah! I relined my doors because my passenger side didn’t have a barrier and I don’t think I did this...

I have the same issue but I also hear wind from the passenger side. Should I be replacing the weatherstripping?

I'd say possible that you weatherstripping needs replacing? I'd say hose down the truck methodically to see if you can get a better handle in where the water is coming from. You can a hose across the top of the truck and hold it in place with a door mat or something. Apply water to the window only so that the water runs down into the door. Get inside and let it run for 5 -10 minutes or so. If no water is dripping from the edge of the door trim where it meets the door, then your vapor barrier is probably in good shape. After that test, spray the whole door, especially the weatherstripping and see if you get any leaks. That should be an indicator of your weather stripping's health.

Rogerman - It's strange that the TSB BO026-00 doesn't mention the drain-back tape. Without the tape, water would almost certainly bounce onto the door panel and leak into the cabin. I'm assuming that all 1st Gen Tacomas have the drain-back tape. I've only worked on my 1996 2.4 extended cab.

I’ll be doing that soon. Fixing my truck piece by piece. First is this, the wind noise is annoying and we just had a downpour in Texas and saw this. Thanks for the tip.

I've got a similar leak but on the driver side only. Door seals have been replaced, and vapor barrier is in good shape. I even have soundproofing material covering everywhere the vapor barrier is. It seems to originate from the front and run to the back floor board. It is hard to tell exactly, because when it happens which is intermittent it soaks the whole forward floorboard. I thought Firewall, but can not see any areas where water would come in. Any ideas?

I appreciate the search link. But, seems like everyone has problems with the passenger side. I have not seen a post for the driver side.
