Was it ever established if the lens was plastic or glass ?

I'd be surprised if it's glass. Mine looks and feels like it's plastic, and all the other lenses are plastic. A plastic part would also probably be easier to design, manufacture, handle, and assemble. I don't plan to disassemble or scratch test it to prove the material, but I think it's safe to say it's plastic.

I found myself wiping dust off of the camera recently and I'd rather not scratch it up. A little wax on the plastic may help keep it free of some water/snow/swarf, but I think dust will stick to it no matter what. I keep a microfiber cloth in the truck for general clean up, and a little water or saliva used with the cloth seems to clean the camera well.

I read the entire thread to see why it went so long. Apparently, there's at least one Tacoma with a washer fluid jet covering the back-up camera. Must be a very special trim level.

The washer fluid guy did his own mod to add the washer , there is a thread here somewhere

My lens cover has fine scratches on it from me wiping fine stone dust off of it resulting in a blurry picture , I am going to try Mother's Plastic Polish to clean it up a bit

Op, put a little bit of wax on your camera lens. It will do the same thing as rain-x will and you don't have to worry about it eating the plastic. If it is going to work, thats the way to do it.

Case closed.
