Damn, I wish I saw this earlier. I've been reorganizing my garage. Really could have used some help.

I was towing my camper down the mountain from Boone today. All was fine ( I thought ) I have a break booster for the camper and whatnot. Thought I had it adjusted adequately. After a bit the steering wheel started shimmying like an epileptic. Pulled over and the front brakes were smoking and smelled. Sat for a bit and upped the brake booster voltage and all was fine the rest of the way home. No more shimmy. Is that normal? I didn't feel anything in the pedal just the steering wheel. I thought a front wheel was gonna fly off. First time I've had the new camper in the highlands. It weighs around 3500lbs so I'm well under the weight limit ( including all the gear and people )

maybe use trans to help with braking as well, down shift to lower gear. might also adjust rears on truck ( use parking brake a few times occasionally as well) and adjust camper brakes as well

The "Boost" function on the controller essentially bumps the voltage to the magnet to get it to grab harder, effectively its pushing the shoes harder, but if they're out of adjustment, they act "normal"

I've got same setup on my camper and controller, you should be on the verge of lock up when you actuate the brakes manually from the controller, you should feel the brakes grab the truck and slow it down on coast no throttle. i've adjusted brakes on my camper once, i need to do it again soon.

Yeah... that's what I thought. After bumped up from around 9v to 10 it made a difference. I meant to bump it up before leaving for home but forgot. I was more interested in the steering wheel wobble. Thanks for the speedy responce Kevin.

pretty certain the rotors where overheated, may wanna check them for bluing and or cracking, they'll expand enough to warp a bit and cause shimmy add to the the gas build up between pad and rotor, you probably weren't far from a really bad time. all that heat and minimal lube in the hub bearings probably didn't make them happy either.

If you never have, now might be a good time to also bleed the brakes with fresh fluid, it may not look bad, brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and will lower the boiling point of the brake fluid as a result. I'm just as guilty of not doing this service on my junk on a regular basis.

My '85 Runner boiled fluid and faded the brakes once, it had solid unvented rotors, i was on a road up near Crabtree Falls, it got to the point i was really considering rubbing the guardrail to scrub speed, it probably would have got ugly from there, road leveled out enough i could slow down with gearing. Was loaded with camping gear and tools, would have been quite the yard sale !

I've got the STT Pro's. They look bad ass, and performed pretty well on the trail. Plenty of claims that they are quieter than other MT's but I wouldn't purchase them again with that as a reason.
The 285 STTPros are plenty louder than my 255 KM's. Apples and oranges I know, but it's what I have to compare.
Was stuck in some pretty good rain storms this weekend on my way to SC through Columbia and never felt insecure. If going for an MT I'd get them again.
