i wouldn't buy a bike at Walmart, my dad did that, the front chain rings folded on the first hill, that was 20 years ago, they haven't gotten much better since.

You're confusing the point i was trying to make, you DO NOT have to spend stupid money on a bike to have a good ride.

Give Dave a $5000 downhill bike, on a down hill course, pretty sure he'll end up eating it a lot faster than the Huffy did. ( Hopefully Dave isn't crazy enough to try this if given the opportunity this early in his riding career ) I'd be lucky to make the first switchback myself.

Absolutely go to a (several) bike shops, see whats out there new and used (might could score a $1500 bike for $500)

there is a bicycle "blue book" to give you an idea what something might be worth. https://www.bicyclebluebook.com Just like cars, pricing can be misleading and a lot of stuff is over valued by seller

a $500 bike at a bike shop can be worlds better than one from ANY box store. new or used

I bought a GT Karakoram K2 in 1989, at the time it was the strongest FRAME on the market paid right at $800, this was after 5-6 other used bikes of various make model and questionable origin. I still have that bike, it is still ridable. Compared to TODAYS bikes it is low end bike shop and the geometry is quite different. my current bike is a 10yo Trek Navigator 3.0 that my lazy fat ass needs to be riding much more than i do.

bought this for my daughter recently, http://khsbicycles.com/bikes/2017-khs-models/alite-50-17/ its not highend but will last her many years and has the ability to be upgraded if she needs to

You should be able to find a nice used bike on CL that was ridden about twice, then put away to collect dust. Don't waste your money on a Wally world bike. For the same $ you can get an older used bike that will hold up and perform. If you ride a 45 lb bike I can assure you, you won't have fun and will conclude it sucks as a hobby!

This is the kind of feedback I need. My only counter is that I'm 6'2 and 250 and am in good shape. So my ignorant brain tells me that a heavier bike isn't going to make much difference early on when I'm learning. Then when I am a little more skilled a lighter bike will be a breeze.

Basically I'm cheap and broke right now so I want to buy something that just allows me to ride and learn. Later I'll invest in a more expensive bike.

    Is that Ill advised?

Stay in the mountain bike arena, it's very easy to potato chip a wheel on road bikes ( you don't even have to try a lot of times) the heavier wider wheel construction will save you there. The road bikes I had in the past I went thru several front wheels

That GT I mentioned earlier still has its original wheels, You've met me, I'm not small

I think it is, because you WILL feel the weight of the bike - not to mention it's not going to perform well and very well may break. You will lose your investment vs buying a used bike which you can turn around and resell should you want to. Buy a quality name brand used bike that will hold some value.

Here's a great local place to shop for used bikes:
