    Yeah..it seems to be a common issue though. Are there common reasons for the CEL on these XJs?

    Missfires scare me especially with the water pump being replaced. Have seen many of those 4.0l heads cracked from overheating the owner before him could of overheated it. If you check the missfire out well then it could either be fuel or spark related.

    Man those things are plagued with CELs. EVAP system is a constant, VSS, missfire usually ignition related ut he said had water pump replaced so I'd be cautious, Crank sensor,

    We had one as a company vehicle at the place I worked in Asheville and that thing was unstoppable. I took a look at it one day when it smelled like burning oil and I’m pretty sure every seal was leaking. Crazy cause I left a year ago and it’s still running strong

    @diverdale to many...

    But like Dave said, they are unstoppable..

    I've tried blowing my 4cyl for three years.

    That six is even better...

    Get a 95 or less. No worries about cel light

    Those are bad for burning valves, sometimes weak valve springs, sometimes dirty fuel injectors (lean out cylinder) seems i read somewhere recent there was a certain head on the newer (01-02)XJ's that was very good for cracking especially if overheated ( head casting number 0331 ) . Its all repairable if you're willing, but how much $willing$ do you wanna do ?

    All the 4.0l are bad for cracking no matter the year my buddy who owned a machine shop had no less than 10 in the shop everyday and more than half were cracked. Yes they can lean out and burn valves though uncommon I have seen it a few times usually by the time that happens the engine was ready for a rebuild. I don't know where they got the reputation for being such good engines the 4 banger yes the 4.0l no. Between those and ford trucks with the 4.6l and 5.4l I bet I made more money off them as a tech. They spray weld the heads and the ones I've seen done don't last long.

    If that is "rebuilt" I'll kiss your ass, rust on gasket sealing surfaces ?? Freeze plugs rusted ? Unless that's a "before" picture save your soup labels. Before I'd drop a dime on that I'd pull the top and bottom covers to check things out.
