My stock 3900lb 2001 DC with the 3.4 nonlifted with stock tires averages 20 combined. This is with a shell. How can a v8 truck that weighs at least another 1000lbs get better mileage?

It's not working as hard to make power. The Tacoma, for it's size, does not that great gas mileage... I don't understand why it's hard for you guys to swallow that a full size truck gets basically the same MPG's

Just cause the Tundra's 5.7 is a gas hog doesn't mean the competitor's V8's are the same.

As far as trail rigs, nobody builds a good one off the showroom floor. The last vehicle I would choose for a trial rig would be a jeep for at least 1/2 dozen reasons. That would be closely followed by anything Dodge. If I had to pick a vehicle to build into a trail rig, it would be the same for the last 25 years: Toyota truck or LC. Toyota would be among my top picks going back 40+ years. The second gens are one of the worst trail rigs that Toyota has built, and yet they would still be my first choice in a new truck!

I don't know why anyone would argue about such things though. I could give a shit what others think or drive. I've extracted enough dumb asses over the years to feel confident in my choice.

    Fixed.

Like he says, they have turned all of their focus towards getting better gas mileage because that is what people want and the technology allows for it.

That being said, the guy is still full of shit about the 22 mpg, but hurt he couldn't get the Tacoma.

I just got a 2011 ram hemi. It on 37s with a 6 in lift, so I'm not expecting good mpgs. But, it gets around 12-13 around town so far. Haven't taken it for any highway drives yet.

Tacoma, and all its competition has pathetic mileage, usually about the same or very similar to a modern full size. Its a fact. Does not change my view on Tacoma. Its an awesome truck and I'm glad I have it. Imo, all midsize trucks should be getting atleast +5mpg better combined mileage and cost $5k less on average to diferenciate themselves from the more capable full size trucks.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Cost is due to electronic junk now included with the truck.
MPG's my 4x4 got 24 MPG on my way to work . and I have two cabinets weighting 200LB each in my bed ( I was too lazy to remove them yesterday)

    How is that bad mileage?

I don't think it's reasonable to expect much better mileage than we already have. All the easy gains are long since taken. Nothing we get now wil come without a price that nobody will want to pay. There is only so much energy in a gallon of fuel, and so much efficiency to the process of internal combustion. It's not a bottomless of well of potential. As long as we use a 4,000 pound device to move a 180 pound human we are going to pay the price.

95% of Tacoma drivers don't get 24mpg. Good for you. I wish I do.
