I've gotten great advice for my 1996 Tacoma on this site over the years. Now my issue is I ran my engine on my 2008 Corolla on an overfilled crankcase until (white) smoke came out the tailpipe (for several minutes idling in the driveway). Clearly smells like burning oil. I drained and refilled the oil to proper level. What should I do about the smoke? Will it eventually burn off? Will it damage any obd II sensors? Its only been a few hours since this happened so I am driving the Tacoma until I figure out what to do about the Corolla. I'd greatly appreciate any input on how to proceed without doing any damage. Thanks guys. Steve

If it just smoked in the driveway, just let it burn off. I'm understanding that you did not drive it, but just idled it. If you have filled it to the proper level, no harm should come to it besides it burning off the excess. If you are terribly worried about it, and it does not act right after about 25 miles, You might want to clean the throttle body and replace the PCV.

Could it passably damage the catalytic converter? I know next to nothing about cars, so this is my own curiosity.

Good news, here is the low down. I decided to idle the car for about 1/2 hour, as when I pressed on the gas pedal a large plume of white smelly smoke came out the tailpipe. I was concerned about overwhelming the sensors and catalytic converter. After half an hour the exhaust seemed clear so I drove up the road a bit. The 1st mile a fair amount of white (not blue by any means) smoke came out, but quite suddenly cleared. Car seems to be its old zippy self now. The reason I ended up in this situation is, I accidentally drained the transmission fluid instead of the engine oil ( don't laugh until you've actually been under a 2008 Corolla!!). Thinking I drained the engine oil, I added 4 more quarts of New oil and started the engine for 30 seconds to fill the new oil filter, before checking the dipstick to fill to the required 4.4 quarts. Wow, the dipstick was 3 inches over the "full" mark!! Of course I had to go get 3 quarts of Toyota brand transmission fluid (type t-iv). I've had this car for about 3 years and have "properly" changed the oil about a dozen times! Can't really explain what happened tonight. I can say there was no booze involved...lol! Thanks for all the input.

I honestly don't think it will mess anything up to horribly unless you notice anything messing up or a check engine light coming on. As long as it's at the level it should be if just let it burn off whatever other oil is left to burn off but if I'm incorrect someone can correct me.
