Does anyone know what this random tubing is in my 03' Tacoma (5VZ-FE). It looks like it was once connected into a plugged tube off the intake.

Some of this Some of that
On my 02 it's hooked up to some sort of vacuum thing that doesn't let the throttle snap shut right away. But you have an 03 with throttle by wire, so you don't have one. It's meant to be a vacuum line to the TB for the 01 and 02

On my 03 and 04 it is just like yours. The pipe is not used and the cap is on the tube you pointed to on the right of the pic.

My 2004 looks exactly like the picture the OP posted. Truck runs fine and the less hoses the better in my opinion.

Ok, I'm obsessive and slow, but I found that this metal tube was used for meeting light duty truck tier 1 (LDT1) emissions standards. These standards were replaced by light duty truck tier 2 emissions standards and Toyota didn't use the tube to meet the new standards.

So, it is a leftover piece.

Yes, it was left unused from the factory so no need to worry. As far as the earlier comment, your 3.4 will not be throttle by wire, but standard cable operated. Throttle by wire didn't come out in tacomas till the 4.0 2nd gen.

    And 2.7

Funny that first gen Tundra technically had TBW from the first year, but still had a cable for '00-'02.
The cable operated a sensor mounted to the TB, which told the ECU to open the butterfly.
'03+ they went to 100% wire and eliminated the cable.

Not true. Drive by wire was introduced in the Tacoma's between 2003 and 2004. My dad's rocking a '04 Prerunner 3.4 with drive by wire.

It was actually mid 2003 model year they went to that. My tacoma was a Dec '02 manufacture date but model 2003 with non drive by wire. It's got the cable to the pedal and cruise control/trans kick down (auto)

    Tundra ;)

My '03 was built in October '12, I put the first mile on it doing my test drive.

True. I was referring to "true" throttle by wire, as in not cable actuated in any way. When I wrenched for Toyota throttle by wire meant no cable bw gas pedal and throttle- strictly electronics. It was separated this way due to the ease of explaining recalls to customers who got worried over nothing.

Since this is the first post I found when I was searching for it, free bump!

I came here after I was doing a normal inspection of my truck and noticed this sticker under the hood.

I have the iECTS and my intake plenum has the unused tube as shown in the original post.

I was always curious as to the purpose of these mysterious tubes!
