A neighbor of mine has a maroon Tacoma 2wd. It is a base truck with four doors. It also has the black plastic fender extentions that some of the 4wd models have. I don't know this guy , but I believe this truck has not been modified.

So did the four door 2wd base models ever come with the black fender extentions? Is this one rare?

I don't think any of the base 2WD 5 luggers come with fender flares at all.

All of the 2WD Base Prerunner's come with the black fender flares.

I rode by the neighbor's house and I suppose it was in the garage. Anyways, I found a photo of a truck similar to his online. I will try to get a photo of the neighbor's truck when the chance comes up.

    Anyone seen these before? Rare?

The five lug four doors have fender flares. I'm not sure why but they do. They also look really funny. It's an uncommon truck op, but nothing to get excited about. I'm sure it's very slow and hunts gears like crazy.

That does look odd. I don't actively look for them, but that is the first 5 lug I have seen with fender flares.

I am always interested in things that are different from normal, but yeah, they do look odd. Why would they be any slower or have gear hunting issues? 2wd is lighter than 4wd, and I assume they share the same tranny options with other Tacomas.

I'll try to get a photo of the neighbor's truck tomorrow.

Slow b/c it's a 4-door 4cyl truck. My access cab 4cyl was slow, but I was able to help it with the manual transmission. An auto would be worse.

Answer the question. Rare, as in not a lot, yes. Rare, as in holds extra value, no.

Only "rare" truck I could see holding some sort of value would be a 4cyl with a factory locker. There is some debate about wether there ever was a 1st gen one.
Talking to a mechanic the other day, he swears there are 2nd gen 4cyl with the factory locker. They weren't available to the public, but the power company had a bunch made for servicing the lines. Wether that story is true or not is unknown to me, but I'd imagine that'd be a rare truck that might command a little more money since it's a desired mix.

Eh, they've made more than a million tacos since '05. There is bound to be some oddballs in there.

The 4 door 5 lug trucks are not super common but I see them pretty regularly. I will say I see more of them then X Runners on the road.

The flares look awkward as hell on them, especially looking at the truck from the front or the back. Lots of plastic just hanging out in space with no tires under them. They should have gone with no flares or used the smaller X-Runner ones on them.

Would be kind of fun to build a 4 door X-runner out of one.
Maybe if I ever total my X I will build one.

The rarest tacoma imo is the 97 v6 single cab 4x4 manual supercharged, I have a 97 its auto and 4x4 single cab the second rarest imo, I didnt want a manual, used to drive a manual for years and said never again
