I think that has a lot to do with it.
When I bought my truck new (Base SR-4x4-2.7) it came with the Firestone Destinations. They're basically passenger car tires. Did very well in dry/rainy conditions.... Snow? Not so good. But I was bound and determined to the the full life of the tire out of them, because... Tires ain't cheap. I got 48K miles out of them, which is pretty good, and then bought 'real' truck tires 3K miles ago. Mud/Snow/AT with a pretty aggressive thread and much heavier ... Which for where I live is usually a 'must have'. The factory tires I could easily get 29+- mpgs. The new 'real' truck tires, 24 +- mpgs .... But a lot more bulletproof with the winter conditions I drive in. Although I suspect when summer gas returns, the mpg's will pick up a bit.

Has anyone tried running a little 2 stroke oil with their gas to lubricate the fuel pump and injectors?

My brothers roommates uncle said he’s been doing it for years in his big Diesel, and I have a tow package so sames.

I keep a fuel logbook, over the last two plus years average 19-20. Lowest tank was 14.3, highest 23.7.

Spent $3493.42 last year and drove 19,943 miles.

    TLDR:
Go from 16mpg to 32 with a drop in filter and the perfect blend of 90.75 octane gas. Got it.

Oh wow... CERATEC is really the stuff dreams are made of!

Has anyone tried to unleash the wind power in addition to that?

    Sure seems like it.......

Since I needed a truck not only for towing, but also for carrying gear on our camping expeditions, I never actually worried about MPG in a truck.
If gas mileage was an important factor, I surely wouldn't have gone for a truck.

With that opening, I don't think you are going to get the responses/reactions you thought/or were expecting to get.

As was mentioned above, you might have tried to do even the tiniest bit of research on the forums to find one of the multitudes of MPG threads on this exact same subject before posting, but hey, I'm probably Nancy...... Negative Nancy.

These threads get so entertaining.:popcorn::popcorn:

I experimented with buying a cheap old vehicle; it made it so I could afford to buy fuel. Impressive!

Add an electric turbo. Big Oil doesn't want you to know about these, but they will help get the most out of your drop-in K&N. Do the reasearcch.

Did you not pay attention in high school chemistry class? Your little experiment is lacking any sort of control data set. You need to do that exact same drive under the exact same conditions, but with pure 87 octane. Then do it all again (under the exact same conditions) with a tank of pure 93 octane.

Then do a third run (again under the exact same conditions) using your half 87/ half 93 octane cocktail blend. Compile the data and have your amended report on my desk by 8:00 am tomorrow!

148 miles doesn't prove much, but I'm not surprised that a 3rd gen got almost 26 mpg in those conditions. I've had my 2007 for 243,000 miles and have a little more data to work with. For one thing I don't expect my 2nd gen to match a 3rd gen for fuel mileage and I also gun slightly oversize 265/75/16 tires.

For normal daily driving around town 17 mpg is the norm. Strictly hwy miles right at 20 mpg. And this truck has been on several cross country road trips to get in 4000-6000 miles in a short time. The best it's ever done was on a 2 lane mountain road where 50-55 was the fastest safe speed. There were lots of uphill's but also lots of long downhill sections where I could coast 20 miles at a time. I got 22 mpg on that stretch of road.

24 hours later I was driving directly into a strong headwind on a straight level interstate trying to do 70. I got 16 mpg on 2 tanks before getting out of the wind when mpg's went back to 20.

High Octane fuel: I've experimented with it some. I was prompted by poor performance while pulling a small travel trailer at altitude in Colorado. Changing to 91 octane made a huge difference when towing at altitude. I was impressed enough to continue using it after I got home. I did not see any improvement in fuel mileage. But there were small gains in performance. At the time I could buy 91 octane for only about 30-40 cents/gallon more than 87 octane. At that price price point I used it exclusively for about a year. The gains in performance were worth the small cost.

But when gas got to almost $5/gallon the performance wasn't worth the cost to me and I went back to 87 octane. Prices have moderated now, but the difference between 91 and 87 octane is now closer to $1/gallon more.

The K&N filter is probably a waste of money. If you read their own literature you don't see any gains with a K&N filter unless you're running 5000-6000 rpms. In other words drop one in a race car and you might pick up 1-2 mph, which can be the difference between winning a race and 2nd place. But in most passenger cars and trucks running 1000-3000 rpm most of the time there are no gains.

I'm only getting around 15mpg, however, I usually fill up twice a week so if my calculations are correct, that's around 30mpg's.
