Well, after almost 3 hours at the dealer this morning, and a couple of test rides with the tech, it appears my wife may have been right all along - 'trucks make noise'. The first thing the tech did was lift it up and check the suspension, spare tire, etc., and all seemed to be fine. Then we checked a bunch of other stuff. Banged on some panels. I told him about the towels I had stuffed up under the fender liner. He tightened a few loose screws on the tonneau cover rail. Etc. etc. Each time we drove it the noise still happened.

After all the wait, the service guy came out and told me it was just the way the box shifts during large bumps. He tried to attribute this to my "lift kit", but the only thing I have in the rear are TSB springs and Nitrochargers. So for a solution the tech put some shims in... somewhere... to try and tighten things up. The service guy said this made it sound a lot better, but on the drive home I'd have to disagree. Seems just as loud to me.

Whatever, I feel like I can just let it go at this point and deal with it. All the mechanical checked out, which is what is important.

You know, I did make a video, even before I made this thread, thinking it would help you guys out, but despite having a pretty decent camcorder, the specific knocking sound didn't translate into the video very well, so I didn't think it would help. I suppose I could still post it if you want....

Sounds to me like he just didn't want to deal with it anymore

I know what you mean, have the same problem with my 06 Dbl.cab. I can take my fist and hit the driver side of the bed and it rattles also

Old thread but figured I'd offer my advice for anyone else with the same problem or for the OP. Check the heat shields for the exhaust. My 2006 rusted around the nut and rattled anytime I hit a bump or closed my door. Just take the nut off and put a big round washer on the put the nut back in place!

It’s not the fender liner, wouldn’t make a metallic noise

Maybe the heat shield under passenger side, over the exhaust?

I told you a long time ago, remove the bed bolts and place large rubber washers under the bolts, tighten the bolts back down. The sound should be gone.
