2014 Tacoma 4.0 auto. There’s a noise, like marbles rattling, coming from under hood. It happens when accelerating or sitting still idling. It gets loud. I’ve heard of spark knock, or pinging, but this seems a little different. Any ideas? When I mentioned it to service adviser at local dealer, he said maybe water pump. Of course it wouldn’t make the noise for them.

I’ll add that when I changed spark plugs a few months ago the middle plug on passenger side had oil on it. The valve cover bolt next to it wasn’t torqued down & I made one turn with torque wrench before it clicked. Maybe it’s still leaking. I’ll have to check that & heat shield.

The oil on the plug/loose cover won’t cause the noise you are hearing.
It may cause a misfire at some point down the road, but not the noise you are hearing now.

It’s like a hollow type of rattle, if that makes sense. Not like a bunch of marbles rattling around. Kinda like clucking your tongue in your mouth.

I've heard that loose marble noise before, though not Toyota. It was indeed a water pump. Check for loose brackets, guards, etc, first. If there's up/down play on the fan/shaft, no matter how little, or a damp spot underneath, it's the water pump.

I recently had a similar issue. Truck started ticking/rattling on acceleration at low rpm and getting progressively worse.
First thought it was an exhaust leak or heat shields, couldn't find any issues there. Went to change the spark plugs and found oil on one of the spark plugs on the front cylinder, passenger side. I also had a small oil leak from the front corner of the passenger side valve cover that I thought wasn't a big deal.
Turns out the oil was leaking on the inside as well, down into the spark plug tube, onto the spark plug causing the issues. Replaced valve covers & spark plug tube seals, no more oil leaking onto spark plug. Problem fixed.
So, if you have a valve cover leak and a loud ticking sounds there is a good chance they're related. Hope this helps.

Yeah, it's free. You just need to create an account or use an existing google account, upload the video and share the link. You can keep it listed as private if you'd like, then only people with the link can view it.

I signed into YouTube using my google account & still can’t figure out how to get a video on here. I can hear the noise in the catalytic converter under the truck.

If the noise is coming from the cat and not under the hood it could be pebbles/rocks that have gotten stuck in the cat shield. Happens on mine frequently and it’s pretty audible at idle or slow acceleration. Blast of compressed air should get them out if that’s it.

I thought providing videos would give more clarity. Last thing I wanted to do was create a youtube account.
