I have a 2019 Tacoma that has a very loud rattle when the truck first starts up in the morning. It lasts about 30 seconds then stops and runs fine. I took it back to the dealership and they replaced the VVT gears but it's still making the sound. Seems to be coming from the front top of the engine and only in the morning. It stops about the time you can hear a vacuum/suction sound. Any ideas about what's going on?

I'd have them tow it right away.

I'd also ask them to document the repairs with photos, it sounds like they made an error.

A mechanic sent you home with an engine sounding like that?

My mostly uneducated guess is that it is something on the exterior of engine and not the valve train or crank.

Ah hell that ain't normal. My 2.7 is brand new and I just started hearing a pop sound as the the motor starts. It's quick and doesn't happen at every start. Almost sounds like a relief valve going off. It's definitely not the secondary air pump sound because that is doing its thing as normal.

Thanks. I'm up a creek here. The dealership sent it to a toyota dealer mechanic and after 3 days they could find anything. the dealership sold it "as is" and it didn't do this when I bought it so I'm just trying to figure this out. I was was thinking that the vvt gears were not changed or maybe the solenoid or screens?

Sounds like you might have a bad lifter. Rattles until oil pressure pumps it back up.

Not sure if this helps but I hooked my test light to the positive cable on my battery and both side of my oil control solenoid plug have ground. Do I have a short?

That’s valve train noise. Stop driving it. Have them load it on a flat bed. Sounds like an oil issue, noise finally goes away after pressure finally builds in the valvetrain

I owned a 1990’s 4 banger 2wd ford ranger that I bought cheap from my father-in-law who was a used car salesman. I didn’t need it, but it seemed like a good deal. One night it started making extreme valve train noise. I just wanted to get home and didn’t much care about my modest “investment”. I drove it 40 miles; all the time waiting for it to explode, but I made it home.

The next day I brought the ranger to my uncle’s tiny ford dealership in rural southern Minnesota. When I spoke to the mechanic the next day, he had nothing to say other than the top end lost oil pressure, but it is fine now.

I drove the truck many more miles after that until I sold it the my buddy who was my passenger that night. He ended up breaking both leaf springs and selling it for peanuts.
