Rattle on startup

I had both changed before the motor replacement did not fix the issue

 

I have a few more questions since I’m in the same boat and I’m really hoping I don’t have to replace the motor.

I see you replaced the VVT gears so does that mean it’s not the valve train or stuck lifters like the other user suggested?

Did it make that noise nearly every time you started it? And was it only ever while starting, or did it happen while driving?

also was there any other symptoms going on? Or them at noise was all it did

 

The sound was the vvt gears my oil was draining and the rattle was because I had no oil to "UNLOCK" them the mechanic said the man hours to hunt down the cause of the oil draining out of the front plate would come close to the used motor and they may still need to replace the motor when all was said and doneso i went with a motor. Oddly enough it only made the sould when above 50 degrees so all winter it was fine. Good luck.

I'm also having this exact same problem. Same rattle for 15 seconds when starting in the morning on my 2017 2.7L, did you get yours looked at yet? Hoping I don't have to replace motor either.

 

Anyone have an answer to this issue. My truck has started this randomly on cold start

 

Did they change the tensioner when they did the gears? I've got the same exact noise on a '16. I was sure it was the gears and was going to swap them and the tensioner. I have also seen where the top chain guide (https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/guide-chain-damper-1356675020) between the gears breaks and lets the chain rattle. I'm curious if this was checked when you got your gears changed.

 

What did you end up doing? I have the same noise and I don’t know if I need to replace the engine or the gears
