I recently purchased a 2012 Tacoma TRD Off road, automatic transmission, with 83k miles on it. I have noticed a rattle coming from what sounds like the transmission.

It only occurs when I get up to speed quickly, and it only happens around 2k rpm, shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear.

I checked all of the heat shields and cat with a rubber mallet and nothing seems to be loose. I made sure the skid plates were tight.

I greased the drive shaft, but it didn't affect the noise.

Here is the video of the noise.

Listened to it a few times but I hear more of a grinding noise than a rattle. It may be your wheel bearing. Also, check to see if the noise goes away when you shift into 4wd.

I just checked, and it does it in 4wd as too. Would a wheel bearing only make noise between certain RPMs?

Possibly, it could be on its way out. Start with the side you suspect the sound to be coming from and get it up on jack stands. Sitting facing the tire grab it at roughly the 3 and 9 o'clock positions and push and pull like your trying to turn your vehicle left and right. If there's play, it could be indicative of a worn bearing. Additionally, while it's up in the air, you can spin the tire. Listen for a similar noise. If you grab the tire at roughly the 6 and 12 o'clock positions and push/pull resulting in play, it could be evidence of your UBJ/LBJ starting to wear out although that shouldn't cause the 'whoosh' sound I'm hearing. Have you done deepish water crossings lately? Like enough to submerge your tire?

Sounds good I will take a look at it. Thank you so much!

I have not done any water crossing with it, but I just bought it used so the previous owner could have.
