Hey guys, new to the forum.
    I have a 23 Trd offroad.
While very low miles and completely stock. I was on a very steep driveway and accelerated up hill in drive and the truck made a loud rattling or grinding sound. It has happened two times both on a steep hill from a dead stop.
Has anyone experienced this or have insight into what might be happening?
    Thanks

I'm betting a combination of traction control, hill assist, or whatever other functions your rig has. My 2nd gen can do some loud buzzing/pulsing/clicking when taking off, or trying to roll back when starting off on a steep hill.

Traction control/hill assist; completely normal. Give crawl control a little trial run sometime, you'll hear all these god awful noises. They're normal though, not hurting anything.

In addition, I actually practiced with mine to see how it reacted after nearly rolling into someone one day. On my 2011 (obviously it could be different on 3rd gen), if you let the brake off suddenly on a steep hill, the brake holds you from rolling back. But if you slowly let off the brake the truck will start rolling backwards and eventually the engine will die, lol.

I was just about to say, the "hill assist" is different between trims if I remember correctly. Some trims (such as Sport), the hill assist may hold you in position and won't let you roll back at all. Offroad/Pro (I think), the hill assist will let you roll back, and the crawl control/traction control/braking god awful noises start. I've never tested how far I can roll back before it "catches" me, but its an uncomfortably length of distance, I know that.. Too far for me to comfortably keep putting my truck through it lol. I've heard of people stalling out trying to apply brakes/gas at the same time on hills. I started using my ebrake for these steep hills instead of left foot braking. It'd be my luck I'd stall backing in the boat at the ramp, and have a waterlogged truck.

I've got a really steep hill leading to a stop light near where I work. Backs up on the hill just about daily. One day I was off in la-la land and realized I was rolling backwards as I wasn't keeping solid pressure on the brake apparently. The next day I tested the roll back protection or hill assist, or whatever it's called. Letting off all at once, the truck didn't roll back much at all, which is what I was used to. But when slowly decreasing brake pressure, yup... she's going backwards.

Thank you all for the responses!!!
I suspected it was the hill holder but it was such a terrible sounding noise I had to ask.

Put it in crawl control to verify it will make the same noise and shaking
