Hello all. So I recently bought a 2020 tacoma trd off road with a manual transmission. During my test drive, I never noticed a rattle when taking off in first gear. Its not extrememly loud so you cant really hear it with the windows up. I noticed it one night driving with the windows down. Sounds like dice rolling around in a tin can. Doesnt happen all the time either but the condition usually present itself when taking off in 1st gear, no AC, with the windows down. The car only has 600 miles on it so Im not worry since warrenty should cover anything wrong. It's just odd hearing that. I stumbled upon another guy with thesame problem in an older tacoma so figure I ask here if this is common. Below is the link to his post.

Possibly a heat shield is loose or making contact

Mine does it since new. To me it sounds like 2 cooking pans rattling together. It sounds terrible next to walls such as wating at a drive thru. I also get the same sound when coasting over bumps if the transmission is in neutral. All in all, the engine and the drivetrain sound like a bucket of bolts. Its fine.

Do you have anything stored in the bed storage box? Also trailer hitch.

The MT makes noise. Mines done it since new and I’m currently over 100k miles with no issues.

Trans fluid and the ADM definitely help though.

I would peak under by the gas tank and look at the heat shield by it to make sure that there isnt an ear section of it making contact with the yoke of the drive shaft. Mine did that once and i had to have the whole shaft replaced under warranty.

So I just installed a bike rack on my hitch but did noticed the noise before putting that on. I'm going to take a peak under the car maybe this weekend and check out the heat shield like everyone is suggesting. If that's not the case, I may take off the bike rack for a week and see if I can still hear it. Based some members on this forum, it also appears to be a comment sound. If it doesnt go away, I will wait until 10k mile service and ask the dealership to look into it.

I love the truck but it drives pretty different from all the other manual transmission cars and trucks I previously own. Even my 1996 mazda B3000 almost feel and drive better than this. The biggest thing that bugs me is shifting into first while the truck is still in motion. Almost sounds like I'm grinding gears and going over two metal bumps. I guess it just takes some getting used to. Still loving the purchase though.

In March of this year I did the ADM and added a quick shifter, Very happy with the results. Would certainly do both again.

Lucifer1, I've been seeing more and more ADM recommendation. I'm going to drive this truck for a bit more before doing that just so I can get a better feel of the differences. As for the short shifter, did you do the URD? I've installed short shifters in all my cars but never in any of my trucks. I'm guessing that you are pretty happy with it and it's not giving you any trouble.

As other have suggested, I would look into the ADM. I had the clutch pedal/master cylinder TSB completed then did the ADM and it was like driving a new truck. I can shift in to first before coming to a stop now and the shifts are so much smoother.

I changed out my transmission oil with Amsoil at 7k which also helped smooth it out a bit.

ADM and redline make a huge difference in how the truck drives. Super easy and cheap. Not sure it will help the noise but it will make it more fun to drive.

I think everyone convinced me into the ADM and it's a must. I'm going to start looking into this.

yes I took a chance on the URD shifter, at the time I purchased it it was $150.00 less than the other two on the market, quick and easy install, big change in feel , no regrets, would certainly do it again.

Well, I took off thr bike carrier on my hitch and crawled under the truck and inspected the heat shield as suggested. Everything looks good and the rattle is still there. As another mentioned, its also on his truck. Im guessing it is common sound on this clunky transmission. Im going to see if it progressively get worst and bring it up on my first maintenance with the dealership at 10k miles.

With the truck off & windows down, Rapidly move the shifter side-to-side in neutral. If thats the noise you’re hearing, it’s normal.

Not sure /why/ they designed it with enough slop to rattle, but here we are

My truck makes so many weird noises I stopped worrying

it’s a toyota it’s probably fine, I’ve had check engine lights come on for 3 days then turn off. It’ll fix itself.
