From the reading I've done in various forums for Rangers/Tacomas, big tires result in poor MPGs. The more aggressive the bite, the worse you will do. I suspect if the look of tall suspensions with tall tires is what you are after, a V6 might be the minimum requirement. The MPG numbers reported by I4 owners with big tires sound like numbers you'd expect from V8 owners with big tires.

I'm kind of curious - what RPMs are you folks at when driving around town? Especially when starting from a stop where you need to get those big tires turning. Also, when driving around town, are you taking it easier or are you more aggressive with the gas pedal?

The thing that reading showed is that many folks make a move to get big tires, then complain about poor performance. I suspect that had they done some research, they would make more informed decisions (maybe even still to go through with the purchase). That goes for a host of aftermarket solutions and gimmick miracle gas additives.

People prefer one look over another...to each his own (I like a higher stance myself). But the fact is that many aftermarket manufacturers bank on the impulse buys. And a few do quite well as a result.

Kase - it's up to you. The OP was wondering about FE for a couple configurations under consideration. Folks, including you, responded with their MPG numbers for their vehicle configurations. If you like big tires and the look of your vehicle, then 12-17 mpgs is what you'll get. IF you were seriously considering moving back to smaller (stock?) tires, then you'll get the better MPG's but I doubt that was your aim. You seem happy enough with your fuel economy not to change the look of your 'beast' so...drive it and enjoy it. That's optimal for you.

I think this may be simpler than its turning out to be. The OP is talking about RC Prerunners.... was that an option in the past? Cause for '12 the Prerunner is only available in AC/DC. If that's always been the case then he's not likely to find the Regular Cab Prerunner he's looking for.

Guess that would kinda narrow it down. If you want a Regular Cab, and you want the 4x4 stance, you get a 4x4 RC.

NM, after searching I see some guys on here w/ RC Prerunners so obviously they exist. I've never seen one myself.

I know there is no RC Prerunner for 2012. According to the brochure the Prerunner is available in AC, though the Toyota website doesn't allow me to build one, and when I was shopping for my truck the dealer said there there was no AC Prerunner. Everything on their lot was 4cyl DC Prerunner or 4cyl 5-spd AC 4x4. All the used inventory was 6cyl DC Prerunners.

That's news to me. I do hope they continue to offer the RC 4x4 in the future.

This is good to hear. I know I can have a heavy foot and something near 20 in town would be great.

I do know that you can't get a RC prerunner for 2012, but it was an option in earlier years. For me the RC prerunner would be ideal, but they can be hard to find. So I would be open to to the RC 4x4 provided they can get decent mpgs. From what it looks like I should be ok in that department when I decide to pull the trigger.

I recently drove from NC to PA with maybe 400 miles on my 2012 RC 4x4 and my best was 21.065 MPG, there was virtually no head winds or crosswinds to deal with and trip was made during the day,

Return trip I averaged a slightly faster speed as I made it there in 8.5 hours, trip home I did in 8 hours exactly, cruised a little faster but my MPG average dropped to 20.012,

    FWIW

I've routinely been getting 22-24.5 this summer. And that's with having to use the AC nearly every day.

450 miles on a tank, 150 of them at 80mph. The rest was going from 5,000 ft above sea level to about 9,000 - 55-60mph, some dirt roads, some idling, lots of stopping and sight seeing. Got 25mpg on that tank, best yet.

Normally I just do the commute to work and back, all 80mph.. always seem to hit 20-21mpg.

So, 80mph kills my mileage. I'm sure if I worked somewhere closer and didn't have to hit the interstate, even on 40mph roads, that my mileage would be much better.
