Here is one of the pumps I'm looking into, it's a Toyota/Aisin unit from a hybrid SUV. I still need to research how the control board operates. The motor is a brushless 2.5 amp unit, so on the small side, but may prove more than adequate for what is required here.... that depends on what it thinks of pumping 75W90 vs Toyota CVT fluid, which is what it normally would be moving through the lube circuit/cooler.

Two large sockets that are required to disassemble the transmission.... A 60mm six point for removing the output shaft nut, and a smaller 41mm for the nut on the counter shaft. The counter shaft does not require disassembly for the main shaft swap, only for rebuilding or, in this case, access to cross drill the shaft for first and second gear bearings.

Warmer weather will have me back out in the shop... sold my heated space last year.

Nothing right now... though I do need to figure out the clutch, might be time to start a clutch thread.

The only developments are a little more desiging on the pump for the forced lubrication system and further leaning towards a pull clutch conversion. The pull clutch can potentially have more clamp load and maintain a relatively soft pedal.

Thanks for the detail! So, ballpark cost for parts and labor is well over $2k tag on the transmission itself? Due to the need to replace the output shaft? Likely closer to $5k with a clock running on labor?

And the pump is more of a “might as well” addition if doing all this work in the first place?

I’m thinking that is likely the most significant nugget here, right? It seems like a $2k bolt in option would be super viable as originally envisioned.

Your estimate of $5k is a good number. If shipping isn't too rediculous, the transmission will be around $3k delivered. The input shaft, roughly $200. I'm willing to bet a proficient transmission shop could swap the shaft in an hour or two. Might realistically be able to get this done for under $5k... it's certainly not for everyone at that price.

The pump is a while I'm there, it's not required, but we may be able improve transmission life.

Hey bud, fantastic project your working on, I love it. Have you had any new updates on your custom swap? I'm in love with that 4.7 1st ratio. Keep up the good work!

No updates on swapping the main shaft. I am working on a solution that will allow the transmission to be bolted in w/o having to swap it.

I think about this often. Definitely curious to see where it shakes out. A bolt in solution would be great.

This is an intriguing option for sure, though I'm not sure it takes the gearing complaints from the stock transmission and fixes them but creates new problems in the other direction? What I mean by that is you now have the taller OD, which personally I would want to regear for, but then doing so makes the really low 1st gear super low. However I don't think I'd want to start in 2nd on the hilux trans. It does make 3rd gear and 2nd gear significantly better when already moving though and of course the 4th gear from being regeared would naturally make 4th much better than the stock 4th. And at least it does provide a nicely deeper reverse, which paired with a regear would also be much better daily. I guess what I'm getting at is the beauty of this trans is that it will let you regear deeper for better acceleration, and still cruise same as stock, or cruise lower rpm than stock if desired, of course if regearing though then it's at the cost of a very short 1st gear.

I am pretty certain I would not want this transmission on 4.30 gears for very long though, the super tall 6th would get old and have very little power for cruising in my eyes. My Frontier was like that, cruised 2100 rpm at 70, didn't get good mileage from that and that's why I regeared it.

Can't wait to hear how it turns out though, so I am tuned in. I'll be even more interested if you regear and share how that pairs with it. I'm looking and 5.29 on stock or 1" larger than stock tires would be pretty sweet. Even on 33's it would be very good.

I’m curious what remains on this swap and I do have a question or two.

    1) what is left to get this running? Are you still working on adding a pump and such for it? A regular install doesn’t need to go through all that right, just swap the input, install, fill, and go?

    2) I see the extended shift housing in the pics. Can you simply remove that and bolt on the RC62F shifter? It looks like they’re identical trans cases so I’d think so but I don’t know what exists in the transmission below the shift tower so I’m not sure it’s a straight swap like it seems.

    3) besides the input shaft swap, are there any other snags or “gotchas” hanging up the installation of this? I think most of us are very interested in hearing the rest of the turnout on this swap.

Hell, I’d like this transmission on 4.30 gears and stock tires and just not use 6th (too low of rpm for this V6 IMO - 2200 at 70). Just using 1-5 on stock gears/tires would be freakin’ awesome. Improvement to 1-2-3-R with 4th the same and 5th being a better highway gear than our 5th which falls right in the middle of our current 5th and 6th. If I wanted to use 6th I would do 4.88 or 5.29 but then 1st would become a granny like I said above. But the other gears would be sweet, maybe even able to start in 2nd on 5.29s and stock tires.

6th on the -RA60F- RC60F with 4.3 final is still a higher numerical overall ratio (honestly close enough that no one could tell the difference) than 5th on the AC60 with the 3.909 final. There's no law that says you have to cruise in 6th. You can cruise around in 5th for miles until you get to a downhill section of road that the motor doesn't complain and is long enough that you won't complain about shifting to 6th and back to 5th when it's over. You must have already known that judging by the next paragraph ...

Not talking about the RA60F or AC60 though.

Talking about the Hilux RC60F and 3rd gen RC62F. The RC60F has 0.777 and 0.646 ODs. RC62F has 0.848 and 0.713 ODs. The 0.777 of the 60F falls nicely between my current 0.848 and 0.713 ODs.

if I were to swap in a Hilux RC60F like the OP is doing, then I would not use the 0.646 6th gear unless I regeared my diffs.

Whoops, typo. I definitely meant RC60F I would have been dead wrong about the RA60.
