Does anyone know whether the Gen 3 4WD manual transmission (RC62f) is interchangeable with the gen 2 RA60? Anyone actually done this??

Gearing is better. First gear in the RC62 is slightly taller, which can be accommodated with lower axle gears since 4th is 1:1 in the RC62 and you have two overdrives in 5th and 6th. In the RC60 5th is 1:1 and 6th is the same 0.85 as 5th in the RC62, which has a very useful with low axle gears 0.71 for 6th. Both have ridiculous tall reverse gears so lower axle gears help either way. Also I believe Aisin corrected the main deficiency and now the release bearing rides on a steel sleeve instead of aluminum like in the RC60.

Doublful it would swap over. If the bell housing will seperate from the housing, it may be possible. But the transmission input shaft length would have to match that of the RA60F as well as the clutch parameters. Best way would be to get a wrecked takama and try and swap. If someone tells me where i can find a cheap RC62 I have a spare RA60F we could do some experimenting!

I don't think the bell housing are removable on these transmissions but it's not unusual for there to be commonality across Toyota. The same transmissions fit on both 3VZ and 5VZ engines in 3rd gen mini trucks and 1st gen Tacoma. A transmission from a 22R would fit a 20R. The RC62 is going on a 2GR and we have 1GR. I dunno, I'm holding out hope that it's straight forward. For a while in Japan you could get a special edition 70 series Cruiser with a 1GR-FE and H150F 5-speed stick. That would be a cool swap since it would have had a completely manual shifted, part time transfer case, too. Although being a Cruiser I assume the rear axle would be offset and both would be right side third member. So, darn it all, you'd have to swap axles, too...

The bellhousing is a separate piece on the RC series. It appears to be swap ready as the next section of the case has the same part number on all the various RC models. I too question the input shaft length, though. The front bearing support has a different part number. The RC62F in our Tacomas utilize the Tacoma RA style clutch operation and fork, where as the the remainder of the RC units use a fork like the R and W series transmissions.

I have located a new RC transmission, it' just a click and 5 days away. Very tempted.

I have to think the Tacoma is the outlier globally. The 1GR got a 5-speed H150F in the Land Cruiser, which is a "traditional" Aisin/Toyota transmission in the lineage of W and R units. So I suspect it's a matter of finding the right parts to make it happen. That's not to say it's cheap, simple or easy, just I assume possible.

The 200 Series Land Cruiser also came with the H Series manual behind a 1GR. You could place the h150F behind the 1GR, and then bolt up one of the JF Series transfer cases (Tundra). The issue is with the electronics that run it.

Electronics? LOL, if I'm going to this trouble (H150F especially!) I'm thinking holes in the floor for sticks poking through!

Yeah, no manual options on the JF Series. Could probably pull the actuator and make a cable shift system.

Can't the H150F just mount the standard HF2A t-case used in many Land Cruisers? Which incidentally is also interesting because there are 4:1 gears available for them as well as the HF2AV full time 4WD version.

Yes it can. The offset axles would certainly get a few looks! I had a 4:1 Orion behind an RA60 in my old FZJ80. Crawl ratio was great.
