I heard that the average engineer driving trains between LA and San Diego with see a minimum of 5 people lay down on the tracks in front of them, or jump down in front of them from the platform. Suicidal mofos never think how traumatic it must be to turn on the wipers to get the brains off the windshield.

Engineers get shot at all the time, not to mention the odd school bus or gas tanker across the tracks as they are barreling forward.

Yeah. Its a brutal job. Even when you're not contending with the suicidal, you've got idiots driving under gates, a noisy cab, crappy weather and lots of time away from home.



On the lighter side, in the town I used to live in, a train hit a 18 wheel tanker leaving the sewage treatment plant. They called the fire department to wash the train off.

 

Rubbing mayonnaise on the thighs then scrubbing Cheetos on them works too.

Edit: I have decades proving up your list. I went to the Father’s Day at my daughters school and told the 4th graders I was an engineer. They said, “you drive a train!”. They were visibly deflated to learn I’m a Civil Engineer. Good way to keep the ole ego in check.

You can use internal frame sprayers to spray paint or rust prevention oil to mitigate this. That being said, doesn't really bother me since rust really isn't an issue in our area anyways.
