Re-gear for 35's. 4.88 or 5.29 for MT?

I haven't done much research on the subject, so bear with me if there are clear answers somewhere. I did use the search function, but couldn't find any specific answers.

I am leaning more towards the 5.29's as this will become more of a hobby vehicle. With the MT, crawling is a little tougher and it seems like the shorter gears would allow more control.

I don't want to top out at 60 mph in 6th gear either. Id like to stay close to 2K RPM at 70 mph.

The re-gear is quite a ways off from my build, but will be the last obstacle before 35's.

can one even get 5.29 gears for the front clamshell?

Edit - looking at ECGS looks like its possible. Spinning 2k at 70mph wasnt even a thing with the MT and stock gears on stock tires due to the low OD.

True that, more like 3K at 70mph stock gears and 33's.

Thanks!! I'll definitely look into that a little more.

If it means anything, I'm going with 4.56 gears for mine. Its a 4.0 with the 6MT as well. We've got a slightly lower overdrive gear than the Autos and for them they recommend 4.88. I ran the numbers and I agree with 4.56 gearing.

I do think that 5.29s in our truck would be a bit much though. If you're wanting to crawl really slow, I'd look in the Taco Box made by Marlin Crawler.

I'll look into both of those as well. I haven't researched much yet. But I just realized that with my plans the only thing holding back 35's will be the ability to turn them. Might as well look into that as well before buying tires.

definitely not 5.29s if you want to go above 60 on the highway lol. I went with 4.56s and 36" tires many moons ago and it put me about to stock gearing. i'm happy with the on road and offroad manners. I put a crawl box in for the tougher stuff offroad, I'd say go 4.88s if you don't do alot of highway driving and want some lower gearing for the trails.

I'm kind of unsure what the duty will be once I get closer to my vision. I want to be able to drive this on the highway to travel to new places to wheel and explore. I would like it to perform well offroad, which is the only time I have wished I had an auto. Maybe for me the 4:56 is a better option. How much is it to add a crawl box to the mix as well?

4.56 with MT... 5.29 will be annoying on any speeds above 60...

i have 4.56 in our MT Taco and MT FJC with 35s.. i hit 3k at 77mph in 6th.

<35s, you'll have nice crawl ratios.. with 35s it's still a good combo for crawling.

if you're doing rubicon or a technical trail with obstacles over a long period of time, your clutch will hate you... but most trails we take our trucks on (i've done a lot of higher rated trails with my truck), the 4.56 will give you enough gears to complete the job.

Thanks!! This is exactly the type of input that I was looking for. I guess even the 4.88 are starting to look a little more out of the question. I thought about 4.56 when I was convinced that 33 was the biggest I would go. Now that 35's are kind of the goal a re-gear will be necessary. It is nice to have some info from other guys with the MT. I don't want to fry the clutch just to get into some fun trails. I am not going to wheel until I get fully armored, but the day is coming quick. Hopefully by the end of the summer it is an entirely different truck. The re-gear and 35's are still out for a year or so, but someday!
