I know there are tons of these threads but I'm having trouble finding them for 1st gens...
Should you re-gear for 285/75r16s or 33s? I have 4.10s stock w/e-locker and manual transmission with 3.4 5vz-fe, currently running 32s. I was thinking of 4.56 but I've heard that's overkill for the highway. Any input would help

Hard to say but you can mess around with this:

    http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

    22AF4322-3145-4405-9280-1FB3365CB135.jpg

Ultimately it’s down to your preferences - do you want low end pull or lower highway rpms. Some people that don’t drive on long interstate trips don’t mind going overgeared since they only hit 60-70 mph briefly. Others doing almost all of their driving on highway or that have to drive 200 miles to get to their off roading destinations will opt for longer (smaller ratio) gearing.

Replaced stock radio with a Pioneer AVH series head unit. Focal component system w/a 10" sub powered by 2 Alpine amps. Weathertech floor mats. Line-X'd the bed. SCS Ray 10’s, Installed an A.R.E. MX series camper shell. All-Pro Apex front bumper w/ All-Pro skid plates all the way back to the Trans. Low Range fuel skid plate.
I’m in the same boat. I have the same setup (minus the e-locker) I have read a few threads that say 4.56’s are the way to go on 33’s but have also heard guys say that 4.88’s is a sweet spot with 33’s. I travel to much and from what I’ve read the RPM’s will be too high with 4.88’s so 4.56’s is what I’m going with.

I have 4.56 gears in my 2003 manual trans. I'm very happy with the performance.

What would you say your rpms are at around 60mph?

I regeared with 4.88's on 35's. For the longest time, I was driving around with my stock 4.10's on 32.8 and it was fine. I wouldn't regear until you decide to go up to 35+.

with that said, if you're on the fence I would call the guys at Nitro Gear. They're very helpful.

Not sure about the RPMs at 60 mph. On the freeway, I hit 3000 RPMs at about 78 mph. I don't know if that speedometer reading is correct with the larger tires.

It'll be a tad sluggish, but you'll be just fine. With 285/75/16 (32.8") tires, and 4.10 gears, you'd be at 2111 rpm at 60 mph in 5th. Divide your mph by 0.028422 to get your rpm for your desired cruise speed in 5th, and 0.023819 for 4th gear.

I wouldn't bother regearing until you went to 35+

Before that it wouldn't be worth the cost or trouble in my opinion, but if you did switch to 4.56, you'd be looking at 2345rpm at 60mph (divide mph by 0.025584 for 5th, 0.02144 for 4th)

I’ve got the same question but for an auto. I’ve read 4.56 for manual and 4.88 for auto. Thinking the jump from 4.10 to 4.88 is fairly substantial and should bring back some pep. Manual should be similar with 4.56

Running at 3k to 3500rpm on the Freeway is not going to harm an engine . Sure you're going to a drop In mpg but it's going to be minimal

    For a regear you've got (3) options

Option #1 Regear for better fuel economy , calculate rpm 200-300rpm lower than stock gearing

Option #2 Regear to bring the RPM's back to stock ( with larger tires this regear option makes the truck feel like it did with oem size tires )

Option#3 Performance regear ..... bring the rpm up to 3k at cruise rpm . This will allow off the line throttle response and better gearing in low range . Calculate rpm about 300 to 500rpm above option #2

I'd been on 33's for several years (automatic) with the stock 4.10's and it was ok but sluggish. I regeared to 4.88 about 4yrs ago. For the driving I do, mostly around town and excursions, this appears to be a good combo. I rarely do any highway miles and there is nothing close to an interstate hwy system near me. MPG: actually it's about the same as when I was at 4.10 with 33's. Not overly great. I think i wore out the engine and tranny a little after all the hard use before going to 4.88. I've heard about people going straight to 5.29 aaaaaand loving it. I doubt they do ANY hwy miles. Absolutely no gear searching at all. If I were to tow anything on a regular basis I would go with 5.29.

Having a hard time deciding between 4.56 and 4.88.. leaning toward 4.56...

    96 Taco 4x4 3.4L 5sp manual
Just moved up to 285/70/17 (~32.8x11.25) that I got from a deal on Craigslist. It added a bunch of weight, not only with the bigger tires, but also with the 1.5” spidertrax spacers at 6lbs each needed to make the 2nd gen wheels fit. Eventually I plan to get new alloy wheels with the proper backspacing to drop some weight, but right now it feel like I traded my 3.4 for a 2.7.

Currently running 4.10s. I don’t plan on going any bigger than 33s as this truck is my DD. I have a Jeep that I’m working on making my wheeler... I know, I know.. Jeeps

I log a lot of highway miles.. spend a fair amount of time at 80mph.

    Any help/advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks! Do think with the 4.88 you’d be over geared if you were on the interstate a lot? I rarely go over 65 and cary a bit of weight when heading out. Kind of sounds like there’s some benefit to going the 5.29 route.

I guess it comes down to personal preference on your daily driver. I too carry a lot of weight when I go out. Id love to get a larger gastank. Since I've relocated my spare I've been thinking about doing a 30 gal GM swap to that area. I've read some interesting posts about that.
I've been pretty happy at 4.88 on my automatic.

After looking into regearing it sounds like it’s going to run ~$3k. Has anyone taken other routes to gain back power after increasing tire size?
