Alright, I’m going to be re gearing to 4.56’s and an ARB locker in the rear. I’ve got a couple questions...

-4 bangers are an 8” front, reverse clamshell and an 8.4” rear end correct?
-Other then the locker and ring and pinions, what else needs to be replaced while I’m in there?

I’d get a full differential rebuild kit depending on how many miles you have on the truck. You should check out Zuk’s page http://gearinstalls.com/ he has done a ton of Toyota regears and I’m sure he could advise or do your rehear job for you. Nitro brand gears seem to be a favorite.

Are you sure about 4.56 it's not much of a difference to 4.10

    Hey man, love the truck.

Well, here’s my thought on it, I want something more with the truck. I hunt a lot and get into some pretty remote places. I don’t have the amount of armor or the need to crawl enough to justify 4.88’s. I want a locker but refuse to just put it in there with the 4.10’s because I know I won’t be happy with it. Currently running an ARB bumper and going to go to 33’s on the next tire buy. I’ve looked into power options for the motor, well what there is for a 4 banger, and the only thing that really seems like it would make a difference for the money is to boost it. We all know how pricey that is, more so then gears and a locker. Another thing that comes to mind when altering the bulletproof 2.7 like that is something failing when I’m in the middle of no where. I’m tied either way, but I’d rather have a locker and good gearing. The truck also sees the highway often, so I don’t want to sacrifice that too much.

I'd say that arb bumper alone is enough to need more gear lol the thing is a tank. Sounds like you're on the right track though. Lots of people just want to regear cause they think the truck is slow and don't consider what they might do in the future. Meanwhile I just look at the left hand lane on the freeway and whisper softly I miss you old friend.

Dude lol that bumper and winch is 230lbs. It’s a horse. This is the 4th 4cyl vehicle I’ve owned so I’m pretty accompanied to it lol I just want a little more out of it in a reliable way. What do you think the total weight in armor you’ve added is? Haha that truck is a tank. Also, who did you purchase your gears through?

I try not to think about it but last time I weighed the truck she tipped the scales at 5300lbs In full expo mode. I actually bought my diffs from a friend. Who was parting out his truck to sas and then didn't lol I believe they are Yukon gears but I'm not actually sure. The winch in the front bumper made a hug difference weight wise I actually have to adjust my 14" 700lb coils cause they settled

At this point Im agreeing with austin2009, for 33”s I’d go for 4.88. I drove a 4cyl 1st gen Tacoma with 4.3 gears and 285/75r16 tires (33”) and it’s okay around town, but not freeway driveable. Espescially if you’re going to be running more weight, I’d get more gearing.

Mule expedition outfitters. Good people and they were having 20% off gears, lockers, and install when I did it a few months ago.

I'm actually legitimately considering 5.29s since apparently Yukon now makes a set for the reverse 8" ifs clamshell but that means 37s :D:turtleride:

I did the math with a gear calc and with 5.29s and 37s my truck will cruise in 5th at 70 with lower rpms than currently with 35s. But the overall cost will be around 6k cause gears, crawl box, bead locks and tires lol

That would be at least another 15k on top. I'll be keeping the ifs for the foreseeable future.

It's plenty of difference all depending on what you are doing. On my daily driver I went from stock 30.5in tires to 32s and changed from 4.10s to 4.56s. There were hills I could not do without downshifting or even going to 4lo on stock tires and ratio that I have no problem doing with the bigger tires and 4.56. 4.56s and 32s still give me a lower final ratio than factory, but I can still do interstate speeds at reasonable RPMs when I want to.

Yeah, if my truck was mostly offroad and going to 33s or bigger, 4.56 would not have been enough. With 32s, it is more than enough and was well worth the effort.

I guess. Just never bothered me having to switch to 4lo or down shifting. I found very little difference on 32s vs stock, only noticed once the armour started going on. I daily drove my truck with 35s for two years. Again even with 4.88s I down shift at most inclines. At the same time my I drive a fat pig. I notice there's a number of people who don't like having to drop gears and would rather have the truck climb stuff in 5th which is weird to me. But to each their own I suppose
