For those of you who have done this, what have you found is the best way to strip off the old chrome? Sandpaper, hands, and patience? Are there other methods that work well, fast, and do no damage to the badges? If sandpaper, et al, what grain(s) do/did you use?

I used bleach. put the badge in a bowl and pour bleach over the badge. it will strip the chrome and copper underneath off of the plastic. I changed the bleach 1 time per day, the stripping took 4 days or so.
a little to clean up with sand paper is all the manual labor needed.

Also, what color do you want to paint them? they are available in red black, and I believe i have seen blue as well from toyota.

No reason to strip it, just rough up the surface, clean, apply self etching primer, then the color of choice.

400 wet followed by 1000 wet should be fine.

    I don't dip..... and

don't smoke, chew or run with those who do. Wait, that's a different story......... :anonymous:

Nothing wrong with dip I suppose. I just tend to avoid fashion crazes/trends. Clear corners, Alteezas, dubs, dips, billet, etc etc. :D

I dipped the grill and logos on my old truck. I had to redo them.every summer from chips and fading.
On the taco, I dipped my rims and they look good, but all the logos I painted. they look MUCH better than the old dipped ones.

I plan to do my Grill this coming summer but with spray on bed liner, I dont have much confidence in Plasti Dip for that application.

    Plastidip sucks ass.

Not a paint replacement, just an alternative.

Actually, I totally agree with you on this but to mess around with the small redoable badges, what the hell, I gave it a shot and it did ok but thats where it will end in my book.

I've been there, don't want to come off high and mighty.

Derp was fucking skookum until I had to remove it. Then I was too stupid to learn so I repeated the cycle 3 more times.. :bananadead:

It's smoke and mirrors. Easy to apply, otherwise it sucks.

I dipped mine without any prep. It has been a year and no problems. I never use automatic car washes and the only time I use high pressure is to clean mud off tires and undercarriage. I normally hand wash once a week weather permitting.

Here's what you get with the bleach method as mentioned earlier - FYI
