Okay. I have owned this truck for nearly 8 years now... In all that time the truck NEVER tracked straight, and has been plagued with a myriad of steering issues all related to the steering shaft, the upper, and lower intermediate shaft. After finally soldifying all tracking issues and isolating it due to tires, lateral play in the rack because of loose bushings, and slop in the tie rods, it came time to address all the issues the shafts were plagued with. The soft bushing in between the rag joint on the upper shaft was an issue and the lower shaft was binding like crazy and causing clunks while driving. I also eliminated the soft bushing after it was all said and done by welding the shaft and the U joint portion of it together. I should had been good right? Everything is solid? Wrong.

The steering wheel splined shaft which connects to both of the shafts beneath it was missing a locking clip which allowed the shaft to bounce around and slip ever so slightly in a in and outward fashion allowing some very mild clunks over bumps as well as odd sensations while at full lock left or right.

I installed the clip today, and ALL issues have ceased to exist. The truck has never driven as nice and straight and quiet as it did tonight on the way home.

    Bliss achieved at last. :)

Pictures below to show my mods of the shafts.

(This is not my own shaft clip just a picture of what it was missing to secure it in one spot)

I like the boot idea! I would chuck that boot full of grease or fluid film too for whats its worth. The steering shaft is one part I'll be replacing during the engine swap next weekend.

Just in case, this is for my 86 with a 22r.

Since I don't have the taco right now.. what's the size of the oem radiator cap? The one I picked up from AutoZone for the 86 is way too small for the Champion Radiator. I believe the Champion uses a 2-5/8 cap. @Athlaos is that the one you're running? Or is yours the 2-11/16 Cap? I don't know if the Champion Radiators you and I are running are the same size. Might use different caps.

Just comparing sizes of everything. 86 oem. 86 champion. Taco oem. Taco Champion.

Good to know. Happen to know the size of that one?

Hg tuner is now available for 2005 -2015 tacomas. Just had my 2015 with TRD super charger tuned on the stock ecu. I had to buy nothing. Dyno guy plugs it in and can do everything he needs. Went from never running correct at 183 hp/176 ft lb to now it's at 295hp/230ft lbs.

Here's a picture of the one I bought to replace the leaky one that came with it. I'm pretty sure I got it straight from championcooling.com but now I can't find it there. It wasn't cheap, but I really like the clean look. You just have to make sure you order the right size like you say. Hopefully you are able to find it.

Ok. Yeah that's the 2-5/8 cap. You mind measuring the cap and also the filler opening? That'll confirm for sure.

4ECB1BFF-AD59-4EDB-88C4-818706426C67.jpg All right guys. What’s ur opinion. Might have to save some money for another truck. It’s got 28k on it. Brand new frame. All stock 5 speed. I think I can get it for under $3000. Don’t think I can pass on the deal.

Just a thought @XPOTRPR, I bought one of these a couple years ago and is well worth the money. https://www.amazon.com/EPAuto-Radia...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

You could match up what fits your radiator then will know what you need and have a nice little kit for future use.

It’s the same one the 4.0 uses. I’ve bought the same cap for my 4runner before.
