    22 sport, manual transmission—

Am I the only one that hates this engine? I mean hate it to the point that they feel like it’s ruined an otherwise good truck? I hate the 3500 rpm jerk. I hate the complete lack of any balls under 2500 rpm. Running 93 octane with OTT tune improves it slightly. But not enough to make me like the thing. I’m seriously looking at getting something else because I’m just tired of driving it. I’ve owned slow vehicles before but never hated an engine like this. No, not buyers remorse. I’ve had it two years.

It’s probably worth as much as you paid for it, so go trade it in

    I've not driven a 4th gen. So I can't speak for it.
But a Tacoma doesn't have power. None ever did, and they weren't designed for "power".
The were designed to be reliable.

The only reason the 4th Gen has "power". Is because people like "numbers".
No way Toyota was going to let sells fall due to HP numbers. Ford and Chevrolet both had "big power" mid size trucks.

If you want to go fast, buy a car.
If you want to tow stuff, buy a full-size.

My feeling is that most 3rd gen v6 owners need to convince themselves that they accept this powertrain

    Leaves MUCH to be desired

To be clear, it's not the engine. It's the gearing. That causes the lack of power. Tires, armor, etc are going to kill it too. Not saying that makes it any better, but there are things that can be done to improve the driving experience. In your case, it might not be worth it if you are so dissatisfied with the vehicle.

I've not had any issues with my 2020. I've read others who have had that issue with shuddering or jerking. To me, that's something worth taking up with Toyota.

Whatever you decide, make it the right choice for you.

I only still have mine because I don’t know what else to get. It is extremely underwhelming to drive and that is with 5.29s and manual trans. It works okay if I keep the rpm high but down low it has nothing. No matter what tune I have. I do run 93 and agree it helped a bit but still nothing amazing.

I overall do not like the engine and think it was a plain and simple poor choice. They should have used the dual VVT 1GR-FE.

    That's a fair statement.
If Toyota would have left the manual transfer case in the 2nd Gen, and built the interior a bit better. The 2nd Gen would have "perfect".

Or you could swap a 4.0 into a 1st Gen, and buy the upgraded LCA and have the "best" gen. But that's not realistic.

It’s funny, I have a 23 TRD sport 6MT with the OTT tune and couldn’t be happier with the power output and instant response from the tune. It’s like driving a sporty truck especially with the 6MT. But I’m not a lead foot driver, I pretty much baby it on acceleration. Couldn’t be happier with it. Different strokes I guess

Guessing you haven’t regeared or have a proper tune. Maybe stock or 33” tires. If you still hate it without a proper regear and tune, then just get rid of it.

It’s not a low rpm powerhouse that’s for sure, if you’re not happy and in the position to buy, just dump it and move on.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
The engine is alright, nothing special. Yes it’s gutless down low, but I learned to work around it. I’m still on the stock tune running 87 octane.

You can either get a different truck, or you can add forced induction, which will be a lot of money for what it is and have the potential to introduce more headaches.

If I were you, I’d test drive some different trucks.

It’s not total power output. It’s plenty fast. It’s the weird driving characteristics I mentioned.
