Mine has no issue, I just step on the skinny pedal and it goes. This engine does not like to be babied. Otherwise you could just sell it and see what happens.

Love my 22 OR MT. More power would be nice but overall I have no issue and don't experience and jerking when shifting or maybe if I do I just don't care to notice.

You can either research other tunes to see if they’re better, or you may just have to get a different truck

The lack of low end torque is a bit annoying at times. Maybe you are just spoiled (no I don't mean it that way). Were you used to driving a different manual before that was smoother? I am guessing that I just don't know better since it has been MANY years since I've driven manual and now I am just giddy that I have one again.

Ditto on the: 1GR-FE. If it's still offered in the 4Runner or any other vehicle Toyota makes, (which of course it is, albeit with an extra VVT gizmo) it should still be in the Tacoma as well.

Period. It's the essential flagship of the truck/SUV line. The 4.0L 4Runner version should have been an option on the '23 and '24 Tacoma. No excuse.

I’m tempted to trade for a 2024 so I can have something that has torque. Don’t really wanna buy something as old as a 2nd gen these days (nothing against them, just the history of their ownership and such and people want too much $ for them). 2024 would probably fix my complaints. I like pretty much everything about my 3rd gen besides its common platform flaws and that damn engine.

I only read the original post, none of the responses. You’re not alone and you’re not crazy. I also tried OTT tune which helped but didn’t solve the root causes of the issues. Long story short, I traded my ‘21 TRD off road for a ‘10 SR5 with 2.7L i4 (still has 4wd). I got some weird looks from the salesmen at the dealer but I couldn’t be happier. It’s still a perfectly reliable truck and I pocketed a bunch of cash.

edit: both old and new truck are MT for what it’s worth

295's mildly heavy build ovt and I tow semi often. I don't seem to have any of the complaints short of never seeing 6th anymore but that's my own doing was never an issue early on when near stock.
