I had just gotten my Taco so even tho I knew what to expect, I was curious. Haven't thought twice about it after the first 2 months or driven differently to achieve any better mileage. I got around 20 with my Ram I had for the past 20 years so my bank account still takes the same hit filling it up.
Like @Sungod said, just sucks having the rpms over 2600 for an hour and a half.

er, no tune required (on my truck). i have never had the problem you refer to. the only thing that knocks it out of 6th is heavy acceleration or a steep incline. sometimes i wish it would downshift sooner/with less throttle.

    What speeds do you drive?
Most that complain about the down shifting drive 75-80

that's kinda my default. i find myself doing 80 unless i'm making a concerted effort to stay below 70.

so you’re saying you, drive 80 on the interstate in a Tacoma with an automatic, and it doesn’t downshift out of sixth?

I have the OTT (recent) and it appears to go all the way to 6th at 65 mph on a flat. I’ve not taken a long trip since the tune to see what happens on a flat interstate at 75 or 80. Around town so far I’ve been getting 19-20. I plan to take a trip next month on mostly 2-lane. I expect 20-21 after going through a tank. That’s going to be about same as before the tune, but I might be surprised and get better as I can tell acceleration and shifting better. But not too worried either way.

That was 90% highway mileage on that trip. Nobody is going to tank average that high with traffic or city environment. This is obvious. Of course when you hit city traffic it’s going to drop off. I generally tank average 17 - 18 because most of my trips are short and I live in a big city. My point is with the right setup and the right speed she does pretty well. This was on the way home from that same trip, but driving a bit faster. Unfortunately, you have to drive pretty darn slow to achieve mid 20’s. Like 55 - 60 mph. It’s almost unbearable.

My best trip during the fall last year, also a before 80lbs of skid plates.

All depends on the terrain. South on I75, northern MI it stays in 6th going 80/85 for the 100+ miles. Heading north on the exact same stretch, 5th gear the entire way going 70/75 with judicial use of the gas pedal to prevent it from bouncing between 5th and 6th. Really can't compare user experience when it can vary so much with a 6 cylinder in a brick of a truck. Doesn't take much.

I just returned from Florida, 80mph at 2000 rpm. Total stock, 2WD, tires aired to 35psi and got around 24mpg. The truck stayed in 6th but there is not many inclines on 75 from Ga to Tampa. I also run Shell 93 octane, just because.
