Ever seen truck racing? They have both 2WD on pavement and 4WD off road racing series.

I would say that depends on deal and the tax rates. The only times I’ve found privately selling worthwhile is if it’s super old and cheap or if it’s collectible.

Most states you don’t pay taxes on the new car for the amount of the trade in as it directly lowers the sale price and that can be in the thousands in tax savings depending on the state. On top of that it’s usually easy to negotiate with a dealer to make up any other difference (if there is one) if they know you are serious and ready to buy. In general they will be able to get a good bit more for a used car than you can selling it yourself so they have more room there.

On top of that you don’t have to worry about advertising it and going on test drives and endless low ballers, etc..

Fair point. But....in my personal experience. When I bought my 2018 Tacoma TRD Off Road in TX...For shits and giggles asked what they would give us trade for our Subaru. They offered us $1500. I sold it on Craigslist for $5500. I will go through the "people hassle" for that type of difference. As a matter of fact in my 46 years on this planet, that has always been the case on trades for me. Just my two cents.

I've never been able to trade and take that much of a loss on a vehicle either. You know they make a killing off of people that want it now and got to trade though.

That would definitely fall in to the old/cheap category for what I was saying and I would do the same thing. If it’s a car they actually want you won’t be all that far from private value factoring in tax savings depending on state.

That's just my Taco example. I have bought about 5 cars in my life. ALWAYS the same story. Sorry, you won't be able to convince me a trade is ever better than a private sale. Regardless of year, make, model, state, dealer, etc. You will ALWAYS get more privately. Like I said. Just my personal experience and 2 cents.
