2018 has 55k miles on it. The temperature was 23f (-5c). On the initial start, it was a little sluggish but was fine. About a minute later I stopped the engine, then tried to restart, and it wouldn't start even after multiple 5 to 10 sec tries. Engine would turn but no ignition

I shut it off, waited about a min, tried again with success.

    I remember a
Something similar happening with an old carbureted truck I had years ago. What causes this?

If you have a volt meter, is the battery voltage close to 12.6 volts with the engine off?

How old is your battery? It takes some time for the battery to recover (with the alternator charging it). Let the truck run at least 10 minutes, prior to shutting it off and then re-attempting

Very similar thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. But it was -30F/ -35C. Only 3000 mi on mine. Turned out battery was bad and needed replacing. I'll bet that's what you need.

Definitely start w battery. I avoid starting cold and shutting off right away, as you’ve drained the battery, not warmed the engine, and haven’t recharged the battery.

If crank speed was ok then maybe you have some bad fuel in the system. Try putting in 8 oz of methyl hydrate or wood alcohol if your tank is half full or more. If there is water in the fuel this will dissipate it. Wait a few minutes and try again. Another reason to keep gas tank at least 1/2 full or more especially in cold weather.

I think I was 3/4 tank today when this happened. I got gas yesterday from Sam's club.

My first thought, along with a throttle clean would be my first action depending on history and miles.

Was there a tanker truck at Sam’s Club filling their underground tanks while you were there? If so, there could have been sediment stirred up while you were getting gas.

You make no mention of the year, but 2017-2020 have a low pressure fuel pump recall and the first line of the introduction is “some 2014-2020 Toyota vehicles may exhibit a hard start and/or MIL ON……..”

It's probably not battery related then, sorry.

There might have been condensation/water in the tank /system before you got fuel. There might also have been water in the fuel you got at sams. Seems like too much of a coincident that's when you started to have problems. Like I said before try adding some alcohol. The 100% kind not the kind you can drink. What can it hurt. Just sayin and trying to help.

    X2.

Some of my customers live like 2-3 mins away. I purposely go for a ~10 min drive to charge the battery and so my engine gets up to operating temps.

If this has happened only once, I would file it away and move on.

Could be flooded. Next time push gas peddle while cranking and release as soon a engine catches or don't shut off initial cold start until combustion chambers clear.
