I bought a 2014 tacoma w/ 16000 miles in 2015. It was a certified used vehicle from the dealer got a pretty good no trade in price. I normally don't buy extended service plans but they were on sale for $1900 and I got the salesman to further reduce the price. Gave me a toyota warranty until Jun 2021 or 100k miles included a loaner vehicle. Second good luck post was my son took it to the dealer for service on a three service special for $99. I had intended to change the oil myself. After the service the service advisor told my son that the right rear head was starting to leak He called me and I asked if was safe to drive, they said ok now but it would get worse he estimated $3200 for repair. When my son returned home I contacted the dealer where I bought the truck (town up the road) and confirmed that I had a year and 18k miles left on the warranty and head gaskets are covered. Called the servicing dealer, they confirmed the warranty and told me to bring it in 10 days and $5800 later truck is fixed, turned back the camry loaner and paid the $7 my fee for coolant and a little oil. Both heads were warped could not be serviced and required new heads at$1200+ each. Truck has never given me any problems, no leaks, no service lights, no low coolant, never got hot. I don't see a lot of head gasket problems with 2014s on line

    Congrats.
    Welcome.
I agree, VERY unusual for BOTH heads to warp on the 4.0 esp. without it over heating. Anybody willing to hazard a guess at how this could happen?

sounds like the dealer was just trying to get warranty money. The only headgaskets to go are on some of the 05-06 old headgasket design, or those that have been ran without coolant.

Can we be sure it has never over been heated since new in 2014?

When I bought it it had 16000 miles now it has 82000. Not one issue since I have owned it. When they informed me that the rightside head was starting to leak they did not know it was under warranty. Machine shop couldn’t resurface the heads because they were warped too badly. I wonder if merely removing the head adds to the warp. If it overheated before I got it would it last 66000 miles before a leak in visible?

Dealer installed a new gasket set, 2 new spark plugs, labor for "cylinder work" on 2 cylinders. They transferred all the head components from the warped heads to the new bare heads. I do not know what comes with a bare head, I assume new valve guides and new valve seats, valve stem seals probably come with the gasket set. Total labor cost was $2581. If I was doing the job myself I would have resurfaced valves and 6 new spark plugs would be appropriate maybe they lapped the valves to the new seats. Seems to run good no evidence of any leaks. Let's see what happens with an engine that has a mix of old and new head components.
