I have been searching and reading various threads, watched a couple of youtube DIY videos.

I spotted grease on the surface of the wheel, and pulled the drum off the left rear today to verify axle seal is leaking. Looks like it just started leaking. Truck has about 110K miles, with no off road.

If I decide to replace the bearing, should I get the hub and bearing assembly?
I assume I could get just the bearings, but that would be more work for machine shop?

Needless to say, I'm a little confused about what is needed at this point.

I wanted to tear down myself and take axle to a machine shop, but want to make sure I have the correct parts.

    Any input appreciated.
    Thanks

Check the rear brakes for oil contamination. May just be worth it to service the brakes (anyway).

Indeed, I purchased rear brake shoes about 2 years ago and when I went to install, decided it didn't need them yet. I guess it does now since one side is lubed up pretty good.

Yup, new bearing, bearing housing, retainer, axle seal, oring, snap ring, retainer, 4 studs, spacer washer, all needed.

Definitely just remove it and give it to a driveline shop.

Do both sides and change the diff fluid.
Get a new diff vent or do the remote mod to let it always vent - many posts on that as a clogged vent can cause the leak.

How do I know beforehand if I have an ABS ring on the axle?

It's part of the hub assembly and sensor mounts into it. Find the wires and connector.

I did this a few months ago. Unfortunately. You need to buy a bearing assembly- there's no other choice. I bought Timken from Rock Auto and it was a made in USA Koyo unit identical to OE Toyota part.

Finished up the driver's side today. I replaced the brake shoes while I was there, but still didn't really need it after 110k miles. I don't know why I didn't go ahead and order parts for the passenger side at the same time, but went ahead and ordered everything today.
Hopefully, by the end of the week will have the passenger side done as well.

The hardest part of this repair (for me) was getting the brake shoes back on. I did take the bearing and axle to a machine shop.

Glad I had ordered a new retainer as the old one was a bit chewed up from the oil seal spring that had worked loose.

Thanks for all the invaluable help guys, much appreciated.
