I have a TRD off road with the rear e-locker. Was wondering if the SR5/prerunner open diff rear inner axle shafts are compatible. The 8.0" vs the 8.4"

Wheel bearings went bad, removed the axles to have a shop press off the old ones and press on the new ones. They bent one of my drum backing plates bad! Hoping they will rectify the situation soon, get the new parts and fix it, but am investigating for plan B to getting my truck on the road. Might buy a used rear axle to try to make this all work.

I would check the part numbers. I imagine they’re the same. Consensus seems to be that 8.4 is not actually 8.4” and is 8.0 with a stronger girdle added.

am kinda in that boat. Need rear bearings. Maybe I need to buy an HFT press, and the $200ish SST have at it myself.

I don't believe so. I seem to remember the E-locker shafts have longer splines for the shift collar on the 2nd gen e-locker.

I could be remembering wrong. Last time i got into those details was in the 80 and 90's trucks.

EDIT: did some searching. Seems like a major split on '05 so all my info is out of date.

I thought I'd help you out and search a couple VIN numbers on partsouq.com (best parts diagram website I've found). I ran a couple TRD Off-Road (Locking RR 8.0" diff) and SR5 (open 8.4" diff) VIN numbers and both VINs listed the same diff, housing and part numbers. I found that weird so I ran an FJ Cruiser w/ RR Locker VIN and that listed the correct e-locker housing/parts/part numbers. Off course, the axle shaft on the FJ Cruiser is different than the Tacoma due to the rear disc brakes, etc.

So long story is, I thought I could help you out, but my resources couldn't immediately verify and finding a hole in my game is a head scratcher. Consider me subscribed to satisfy my own curiosity and figure out where I went wrong.

sounds like this could be a good cheap way to get rear disc brakes
Slap in an FJ rear. Put an 8.4 in it to get the fragile 8 third out.

maybe cut and weld flat perches to convert to leaf spring.
