I think my wheel may be slightly out of round or possibly axle shaft bent. Going to try putting the spare on today and see how it does. No visible damage and discount tire said they balanced it. thought i was my tires so i replaced them all but the issue persists.

it's not visibly bent but possibly out of round. I can see a very, very slight wobble in my mirror but can't tell if it's just an optical illusion it's so minor. just wondering if anyone else has dealt with a similar issue and what the result was.

It could be a bent rim, bent axle or something as simple as a wheel weight being knocked off. Check the rim for mud/dirt stuck to it on the outside and inside. A bent rim and axle should be easy to spot, just have someone watch as you drive away from them, if the rim is bent the wheel will wobble, same with a bent axle. If the wheel is running true with no wobble than look for a missing wheel weight or mud/dirt on the rim.

i've had it balanced twice so i don't think balancing is the issue. and it did it with the old tires as well. got a service appointment scheduled for Tuesday if i find it's not the wheel. Looks like i can get a good OEM style wheel for $100 online.

Not much else to do first other than put the spare on and see if anything changes

Tire belts are bad or shifted if the rim checks out OK.

hope so. would prefer that over axle shaft. Can shops get the axle shaft easily, or will they want to replace the entire third member?

Pretty easy to bend those rear axles as I found out with my tundra.

yea, driver's side rear. i don't even abuse my truck or go off-roading. didn't seem like i hit anything hard enough to bend an axle.

Yea at 5-10 mph you wouldn't expect the axle to get tweeked.. bummer. Must've been some kind of weird way the vehicle weight pushed against the wheel.

I’m not saying you did, but sliding in to a curb can, and often does, bend parts. It just doesn’t take much speed.
You might consider an insurance claim, of course that’s your decision and you might further research to see if it’s just an axle or the housing too.

I hope a harder hit than described is needed to bend something on these "off-road" tacos...

Was I badly misled? Are these really just "mall" trucks?

no idea. hope it's just a bad bearing. very disappointed in the quality if a pothole bent an axle shaft. from what i read the axle shafts are probably going to $500-600 at a shop, plus labor. probably $1000 at least. maybe more if they replace bearings too.

I had a body shop friend that ended up farming it out to a toyota tech that works on the side. They had to replace the wheel, the bearing, gaskets, and axle. I had filed an insurance claim...I think they billed my insurance company $1800. I no longer have that insurance company anymore either.

took it to dealership today and they said it should be covered under warranty. at first glance, service advisor thinks it's an axle bearing. guess i will find out soon enough. my appointment is for tomorrow so i don't think they will be looking at it today.

For what it’s worth, I’ve “abused” my truck way beyond what you describe and not damaged anything. For example, on several occasions I’ve driven right over a curb at that speed on purpose.

I also have a hard time believing you bent the wheel unless there was curb to wheel contact. Generally the tire soaks up the hit.
