Had the issue on my 4runner, after replacing the seal 3 times, it turned out to be the bearing... I would check the axle housing for scratches near where the abs ring would sit. It didnt happen till i engaged the rear locker, after that the bearing had a lot of play, and leaked into the drum brakes. easy repair is to just get a axle side with good bearings and install it.

Around $26,000 worth of unleaded in the fuel tank.
I got some new bearings installed. It was just $100 for labor with a 24 hour turnaround time. The shop put in new retainers at no extra cost (a $25 value) The Beck Arnley bearings from Rockauto.com were $25 each and are made by Koyo Japan (same as OEM that are $89 ea.) with new inner and outer seals the leaking has stopped. New rear brake shoes were needed to replace the oil saturated ones. The diff breather itself is a simple piece that can be removed and cleaned out; there is not much benefit to buying a new one. It is good to have rear brakes that work again.

And wow! What an old thread.
