Rear Brake Conversion

Update
Today I loosened the console adjustment screw all the way off, and removed the wheels to tighten the star wheel on the disc/drum. Before I worked on the back wheel I lifted the handbrake 2 clicks (youtube video suggests doing that), then I got one side snug by adjusting the star wheel and In doing so the other side was snug too, then snuggled up the console but until the truck held in drive mode (2wd) 5 clicks.

went for a test drive and there was drag so I loosened the console adjustment screw 1 1/2 turns. It held on 7 clicks in 2wd. Tried it on a aggressive slope up and it held on 9 clicks, and again on a decline and it held on 10 clicks (4wd in gear going forward).

when I got home it felt like it was dragging a little bit so I loosened it 1/4 turn in the console. ... wait and see, still trying to source a new brake cable but today’s test makes me feel a little better.

 

Had a chance to test crawl control? Any other news after a little more driving with this conversion? After having to clean the drum system out a few times, I could see myself upgrading to discs.

 

I'm looking for a Drum to disc conversion for my 2017 Taco? I spend a lot of time in wet + Ice & snowy conditions off road. Any suggestions ??

If you sink the rear end in mud I would still recommend cleaning out the parking brake drum . Your never going to get away from that . Probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to grab an extra set of shoes for the rear too if they’re kits shoes are kit specific ( in case there hard to get later) but chances are they are repurposed from an existing car or truck . Do you live in a cold climate? I probably won’t ever change from the factory set up but that is my one gripe . Below freezing I can’t use the ebrake because within a hour or two the factory drums lock up.
It would be nice to know if your new kit has a below freezing lockup issue

SOS uses the internals from a 4Runner and therefore used the drum shoes inside the Rear Disc Rotors there is an adjustment inside the disc for this.

General update - I think i have the ebrake dialed in to where it needs to be, It is most def holding above and beyond what is required for street legal, i'm just playing with it cause i do a lot of off road driving and i want more out of it, I think it is doing a good job so far.

I haven't tested the crawl control yet but the stopping power is impressive. Since i live in a place with a lot of dumb drivers, i tested out the slam on the brakes trick and wow, it stopped right now.

Truck truck will be in the shop getting mods and what not for the next 2 weeks but i will keep you all posted, I think this forums important for anyone looking to add this mod to their trucks.

Notes:
1. After installing the brakes it is important to bed the brakes, - I did this by driving 50 km/hr (30 miles/hr) on straight road, and pulling the ebrake handle up for 3-5 seconds, and then wait for at least 15 seconds. I repeated this process 4 or 5 times and after that the brake pads held way better.
2. Understand new brakes need to be worked in a bit, so adjust to work. drive for a day or two and re-adjust everything. Seems to be good now.

Oh, damn. I didn't know this was a thing. I want it.

 

Isn't there another adjust somewhere along the cable? Like where the parking brake Y's off? I'm probably imagining it.

 

There are 2 adjustments
- in the console and,
- at the wheel (star wheel behind the disc )

 

Idk why I imagined one on the cable, under the truck. It almost sounds like the lever arm for the parking brake doesn't have enough "throw". Glad u got it sorted though.

 

Funny you saw that, I was thinking about having a guy machine me a part to add to it to make the curve (throw) increase... Toyota dealer quoted me $1000 to replace the cable ... pft I don’t think so haha

 

I didn't see anything haha. Just pictured it in my head based on your symptoms lol

 

The cables are about $120-150 each give or take in Canada. I assume they added a lot of labour to that quote? Haha.

did you order right off the sos site? was the shipping cost bad to Calgary?

 

Glad you posted this. been having the same issue with mine since it was installed, but haven't worried about it. Will now go check it out

 

Further to your comment about the getting extra parts just in case ... the conversation uses 2010+ 4runner parts, so everything is OEM size.

 

Jeff any idea what a part number would be for that? or where to buy the Toyota dealerships around here are being sketchy about giving me the cable to do myself. I hate when they act like that, it is my truck let me do what i want.
