Ok, so I go to do the brakes all around on my kid's 2000 PreRunner. I'm finishing off the rears and, as I always do, I start to clean off the axle flanges with a wire brush, my screwdriver and a high quality gasket scraper so as to create a nice mounting surface for the new drums. As I get into it it seems as if the axle flanges are entirely coated in some type of material (almost like paper or a water pump gasket) that I eventually have to completely remove in order to get to bare metal.

What's up with this? I've never seen it before and I've done 100's of brake jobs in my lifetime. Is it some type of corrosion barrier or a replacement axle?

It's a Toyota thing. Kinda like the sheet metal "slinger" on the back side side of the flange. I clean the gasket off and do not put one back on.

I figured so. Kind of a pain in the ass.

I'm still searching for the perfect tool for cleaning these flanges that allows me to get into the tight area between the lug studs and the center bore of the axle. Maybe a small diameter wire wheel attached to a drill or Dremel? What do you guys use? Emry cloth and some hand tools takes forever, especially with the "Toyota thing" you mentioned above.

Scrapers, thick and thin, power wire brush, a little solvent, cussing.
