I just changed my brake shoes and am now getting a rotating clicking sound from both sides. Also It looks like the pad is wearing only on that outer edge in the picture. From what I’ve read it’s likely a shoe to drum misalignment but not sure how to align them.
I did have to loosen the tension quite a bit for the drums to slide back on. If I tighten them anymore they will not go back on. I’m doing something wrong here. Can anyone offer me a suggestion? D5F71096-608B-4D21-A68B-5991D40485C2.jpg

    OEM or aftermarket? OEM only.

You're supposed to back it off 15 clicks from locked.

Autozone shoes. They’re definitely backed off more than 15 clicks but any tighter and the drums will not fit back on.

People always have problems with aftermarket.
If a difference in size doesn't get you, the difference in friction will.

I had a similar issue years ago on an Olds. The Mechanic changed the Shoes but the drums looked great so he did not turn the drums. Turned out the original drums and shoes "wore in together" . The Drum and shoes actually wore not straight across the faces. When the new shoes were put in the old drum, the shoes would "slide" over and hit the closed drum edge and click ... Turned the drums and it was fine ...

I Read that some other folks had to change the drums too. I guess I was hoping to get lucky and not have to spend another $200 right now. But I think I might have to. Adjusting the tension as suggested definitely helped but the clicking is still very loud.

Check the runout on the drums, (spec is probable around +/-.008) and have them turned. Hardly anyone left does it but there are folks out there that will. I use to for $20 a side. Should be able to turn them.

Edit....max ID should be stamped on the drum if they still do that.

Are the old shoes actually worn to need replacing? A lot of times just cleaning out the dust can stop squeaks. Might get you by for towing the trailer until you can figure out what is going on. Of course only do this if the old brakes are still safe.

They actually didn’t look that bad I don’t think. 67950137-7C6E-4303-ABBF-425ECC82D18B.jpgWorst case I’ll be putting them back on and trying to adjust again. I just put on new drums and I’m trying to adjust the tension from there currently.

4.5mm is new, that looks like 3-4mm, they were fine haha.

Best tip is one side at a time and analyze the placements.

We had a pretty cool plastic sink at firestone you could roll around and place under the brake assembly. Even had a squirt gun for brake clean...lol.
Those shoes look good, slap them back in and roll out. That clicking is the self adjuster and will be noisy for a bit....prolly at least 25 miles with some average braking.

@Sep1911 I don’t believe so. I took my time with everything. But it’s possible.
After replacing the drums here’s where I’m at. the passenger side is perfect. Nailed it!

The driver’s side is clicking loud. But only in drive. Not at all in reverse. And much louder when applying the brakes.
unfortunately I just had to drive home with it still making all that noise just now. And that whole side got extremely hot. I left the adjustment on the looser side to keep friction to a minimum but I’m pretty sure I did more damage. Hopefully it’s just the drum and pads so I can swap in the original ones.
it’s always the simplest jobs that turn into days like this
    :annoyed:
This is how we learn I suppose

I looked it up and it looks like on these tacos the front and rear shoes based on pictures. I would compare the old ones to verify it just to be safe. What made you replace them out of curiosity? From what I’ve seen these things seem to last like 200k on these trucks. Try yanking on your e brake a couple of times to see if it will center it. Did you get new drums? Lastly do you have a picture of the final install?
