I just did my rear brakes, I replaced the shoes and drums.. and new hardware.

Truck has 45k and this is the first time they’ve been replaced.

I adjusted them and they feel great. But now my E brake won’t hold the truck.

I tightened it under the center console and adjusted the brakes. This helped along with setting them in on a drive around town.

Am I doing something wrong? Help me out here

New shoes tend to have high spots that wear off quickly, simply readjust them again to have drag.

The ebrake housing tends to break as they exit the back of the drum, it can make them weaker. It won't stop it from working but can affect operation.

E brake housing being the part under the center console? It looks good.

I have never done drum brakes on a Tacoma only on my Corolla I had years ago. It always a pain.

When adjusting, how much drag? Should it be a consistent drag, or a intermittent drag, or moderate drag where the wheel does not move easy?

Adjust until a light drag. Tighten up on the adjuster nuts under the console.

Some videos on YouTube say light drag and other say heavy drag. Where it’s tuff to turn and let the brakes wear in. When I took the drum it was tuff to turn and take off. Confusing.

I replaced the wheel cylinder cause there’s was some oil around the boot, Rear passenger Side.

I have 140k and I’m still on the original rear brakes.... Only my second set of fronts. What are you all doing to your poor brake pedals?

I would recheck the drag, after replacement it can take several adjustments before the auto adjuster will be effective I’ve found.

I was putting extended studs and just decided to replace the shoes. Then chased the rabbit and got new drums.

I remember 3rd gen 4runners had the trick where you roll the truck backwards and pull the e brake to adjust and tighten the rear brakes. does this work on Tacomas too?

3rd gen 4runners were so great. Except for the undersized front brakes and crap ass rear brakes. Burned so many rotors.
